I am not sure if I am supposed to post this in the reloading section, the bullet testing section, or the hunting section. But, since my previous posts were to the reloading section, I will post here.
Using a .270 Win. and AB bullets (Nosler factory loads), each for the first time hunting, I was very impressed with expansion performance I got on a WT buck I shot this morning. It was a difficult shot across 175 yards of field with an intense cross wind, into the woods, threading the needle between trees, into the last possible opening before the buck would have been out-of-sight. It was not the kind of shot that I would advise a novice to take. I allowed for six inches of wind drift and hit right behind the shoulders.
I have had concerns about the expansion of the AB bullets on WT deer, thinking I liked the ballistic tips better for deer. But, I have to say, the exit wound on this deer was very impressive considering it was a lung shot. I don't understand it, but the bullet appeared to break two ribs on the entrance wound. It looked like the bullet went between the ribs but both were broken. The bullet caught another rib on the exit.
Except for a .264 Win. Mag. with Rem. CoreLokt bullets, I don't think I have seen an exit wound like this from any rifle I have shot including a 30-06.
The bullet shock was so great that it stopped the heart, leaving almost no blood trail in the 30-40 yards that it ran. I have only seen such big holes through the lungs from 12 gauge slugs. I almost took photos, but decided against giving any ammo to anti-hunters.
Nosler, thanks for a great job on bullet design!
