Hunted with a couple of good guys here in Washington yesterday. Two hunters, one day, two bears! What a great day!

Both of us were hunting with .30-06 rifles. His was the stainless Ruger 77, using 150 gr Remington CL soft points. I was using my Rem 700 CDL with 165 gr Nosler Ballistic Tip bullets. This rifle is finally "blooded." Very satisfied with that shot.

My pard took his bear at about 220 yards with one shot from the .30-06, then it needed a finishing 300+ grain bullet from the .44 mag revolver when we came up to it in the brush at about 4 yards!

Mine was a one-shot kill at about 325 yards with one shot from the .30-06 Rem 700. I was VERY impressed with the performance of the 165 gr Ballistic Tip bullet. Recovered the jacket, but there was an exit wound. Looks like the lead core punched on through, and the jacket recovered. I'll weigh and measure it later. Haven't been home long.

Regards, Guy

That's pretty darn awesome Guy! Congratulations to you both! Have to love the 30-06 and you finally got to use yours for something other than steel. Should be some fine eating too.

Nice job Guy!! Is there some chocolate color to it or just the lighting that makes it look like it?

Thanks guys. Lefty - there's some chocolate coloring to it, and a white patch on the chest as well. But - it's pretty hard to see the chocolate/brown color. Darkest bear I've ever shot.

I was so impressed with that Ballistic Tip. Bear was quartering away from me and moving forward. I put the crosshairs on the shoulder and squeezed. Bear lunged forward towards a big tree and never moved again. Maybe 15 feet after being hit? The bullet jacket was recovered, nicely expanded. The lead core was gone, I'd assume out the exit wound which was through the off-side shoulder... Reinforces my opinion that this is one heck of a killing bullet from the .30-06 in addition to being so danged accurate.

Regards, Guy

Excellent report, Guy. Congratulations to the both of you. Beautiful bear.

Congrats Guy! A very fine looking specimen. Few things are more enjoyable than hunting with good friends. Thanks for sharing your hunt with us through your stellar photos as well. I can't wait for my season to open next Wednesday in Wisconsin.

Great job. One of those outstanding days afield!

Great hunt, congrats! I'm just finishing coffee and heading out myself to check trail cams and maybe bump into a bear.

Nice Bear Guy. I thought you were going to use your 25-06 for everything this year ? I know your like the rest of us lots of rifles to share the joy of using.

Ah, I had asked for opinions about using the .25-06 for everything. I still think it would work fine, but had this "twin" to it, a .30-06, sitting here all pretty and ready for action... And it hadn't been blooded!

The practice with that rifle at 300 yards sure paid off. Perhaps I'll use the .30-06 for everything this year? It did take a pretty good whack on a rock when I fell hard. Right on the scope ring too! So, I'd better check zero before going afield with it again.
