I shot under one Saturday, I watched the bolt slip right under his brisket. I went to double check for blood, but the bolt was clean except for some hair in the fetching, and no blood on the ground or on the hair. But, there was a considerable amount of clean white belly hair on the ground. I think that deer probably gave me the whitetail equivalent of flipping me off for giving him a bald spot just as the weather gets cold...
As they say, a clean miss is better than a bad hit.
