What chambering would you use?

Gotta be different here...6 Dasher or BRX :) . I see more LR matches being won with these calibers than any others. Brass is easy to fire-form and the added 100-150 fps over the 6BR will help in windy conditions. Our state 1000 yard F-class match was won with a 6 Dasher, beating all the 7 and 30 caliber rifles on the line. That doesn't usually happen in windy conditions like we had this year. A BRX was second followed by a .284 Shehane. There were a few 6.5's calibers used, but they weren't competitive on a windy day (some of it was due to who was driving I'm sure). Top 8 spots in the 600 yard state match this year were Dashers or BRX.

One of the little 6BR wildcats is hard to beat for accuracy and light recoil in the LR game.

I'm thinking my good ol' "Green Machine" Rem 700 may use up the present Krieger .308 Win barrel about the time I exhaust my supplies of .30 cal match bullet through it...

I want first chance on all of your leftover 308 "stuff"

Bill,

Tough to beat the 6.5mm for long range shooting.
What distances are you looking at?

Jim I have a friend who is a farmer and you can shoot all the way to 1300 yards on his one field. I was shooting my 300 rum at 600 and 700 last Saturday. Got me thinking about an accurate long range plinker.

I am going to be odd man out on this I am afraid, but I always wanted to shoot a .300 H&H for groups at 1000 yards with 190 gr match bullets. This loading held the Wimbledon record for 35 years.

Old school, but cool.

Wasn't all that many years ago, less than ten as I recall, that a fellow won our national 1,000 yard prone championships (beating then champ David Tubb) with a .300 mag of some sort, on a Mauser action... That man knew his rifle and doped the conditions.

Mostly in long range competition anymore though, it's 6mm & 6.5mm's winning.

Nice! Let me know if you need any help.

OK, I'll voice my opinion but it's a costly one that will burn through barrels. :)
6.5x284 Norma.
Barrels aren't an issue if you have a Savage as it's pretty easy to swap out barrels and a factory barrel isn't that costly.

If you were to build a rifle for nothing more than long range shooting at targets only what chambering would you build off of?

Take a look at anything 6mm/.243 caliber. The balance and speed and BC of the 6mm's will keep them running with anything 6.5 or larger to 1K yards. I figure I'll easily push a 105-115 grain bullet out of the same sized case a minimum of 200 fps faster in than the 130-140 grain 6.5mm. That means it's going to take a very long distance for the 6.5's to overtake the 6mm bullets.

Code:
Target Bullets

Description Bullet Diameter Weight (Grains) G1 BC G7 BC Twist Part#
 6 MM
 90 gr Match BT Target .243 90 0.411 0.210 10 24425
 95 gr Match VLD Target .243 95 0.480 0.246 9 24427
105 gr Match BT Target .243 105 0.493 0.253 8 24428

105 gr Match Hybrid Target .243 105 0.547 0.278 8 24433
108 gr Match BT Target .243 108 0.511 0.262 8 24431
115 gr Match VLD Target .243 115 0.545 0.279 7 24430

Well, since the World Record at 1000 yards was just set with the little 6mm Dasher, I think I'd modify a 6mm BR into the Dasher and call it good.

2.7" for 10 shots at 1,000 yards is pretty impressive.

Nice to know the rifle & cartridge can produce that, even if I likely can't drive it that well!
