it is a 338 RUM
Right handed 700 action
26" Hart SS fluted barrel
Removable muzzle brake with thread protector
McMillan fiberglass stock
Talley bases and rings.
Shilen trigger
Weaver Super Slam 2x10x42mm with EXB recticle.
Dies and brass.

Shoots tiny little bug holes
WHAT WOULD YOU PAY for the above package?????

Depends on how many rounds of brass but I personally wouldn't pay over about 1400-1500. Used custom guns are worth the components they are made with to me. So magnum 700 action 400, Hart barrel 325, McMiliian stock 450, Shilen trigger 100, Talleys 50, muzzle brake 50, the scope wouldn't be worth much to me, dies 35, brass?

Custom rifles seldom hold their value unless you find a buyer with your tastes...exactly your tastes.

Man someone would have to spend over $2k for the above package no?

Yes! For me, it depends on who made it, what brand upgrades and how it performs before I start any adding values.

Yeah probably over 2500. They are only worth what someone will pay for them though. If the are made by certain smith's the value can go up considerably but without the big name they typically don't bring the big bucks.

1200 -1400 is fair, your still dealing with a used remington 700 action, regardless of the accuracy claims.

$1500 or so...

Big name gunsmith or just somebody who put it together?

Number of rounds down the tube? A worn out Hart, is just a worn out barrel.

Used scopes are typically worth about half what they were new.

What it would cost to build may not have much to do with what it's worth on the used market. My "Green Machine" cost a fair bit to have built, but I don't think it would bring a lot. It's just an accurized Rem action, a Krieger, a McMillan and a decent older Leupold. Built by a fellow who is famous in long-range competition, to prior generations of shooters. I'd be surprised if someone offered me $2k for it.

Yep it'll run 2k to build. I'm building a friend a rifle as a wedding gift as we speak. $1000 for action barrel gunsmithing. $250 for stock $150 for bottom metal. $250 Jewell trigger $50 rings $10 action screws and $18 stock spacers. So that's just over $1700 with the Pelican and the Z3 I'm putting on it I'll be close to $2700 out the door. I could have tried to cheapen it a bit by looking hard for a used BDL SS action but I wasn't gonna spend the time.

My buddy just built a rifle very similar to what your talking about. Only big difference is it was an edge not a standard 338 rum. It will be a very capable rifle!

Less than 50 down the tube. Very reputable smith out of Cody Wy.

OK if you were in a 338 rum mood what would you pay?

This is fun

There's one in the Classifieds for $1350 that I wish was a right handed model.

Is this one of those I want it or I need it?
You already have the guided missile.
What can you do with this that you can't do with that?
I can see paying a fair price for it if your going to use it and it fits you.
This is what I would ask myself first and then put a price on what I was willing to spend which would be between 1200 - 1500 and find another scope for it.

OOOOOPS: I didn't read the post you were questioning.

Fotis, just looking at the parts list, you're in the $1600-1800 range, without the scope, which I view as negligible in this scenerio. That's the parts and maybe a little of the labor from the smith to assemble it. What I'm saying is, you could duplicate this rifle for ~$2k, if I don't miss my guess, brand new, with zero rounds, built exactly as you'd like it built, with your taper, your throat length, your stock color preference, your LOP, etc. So from there, I start getting pretty picky and thinking that someone else's preferences and fit are not going to be perfectly mine, most likely.

Now, bear in mind before I mention what I'd pay for something like that, I am known to be so tight I squeak when I walk, but then again, I get good deals on my rifles. I'm not afraid to spend the coin, if need be, but I'm not going to spend $1000 when $800 will do the job, nor will I spend $2k when $1500 will get me the same with a little more work on my part.

So, that said, I'd start into this custom with the full knowledge that you don't know how the bore has been treated for the first 120rds, on a rifle that is not a "long life" barrel in the first place, due to the chambering. It's not as short as, say, the 7mmRUM, but you won't get 3500+ rounds out of it like Guy does the green machine. So I'd start my bidding at $1250, knowing I'd be elated to get the rifle for that price. I'd be happy to get it for $1350-1400, and I wouldn't pay more than that. Bear in mind, I have "lost" rifles when someone else was willing to pay more, but I've never been disappointed in what I've paid for a rifle, nor have I ever really regretted not spending more to win one of those I ended up losing. Take out all the emotion and ask yourself what it's worth, really, in the "strictly business" sense. The sum of the parts and labor is less than $2k, I suspect, unless I'm missing my guess on some pricing. It could easily be duplicated for $2k or less, brand spanking new. It could be done for much less if you have some parts or the luxury of shopping around for deals...
