What Savage?

If you could buy any new Savage, what model would you get and in what cal?

I am thinking a 12FV, 25 LV, 25 LVt in 204 or something in 6.5-284.

The gun will be for range time and fun shooting.

Well, I could buy a new Savage, but I don't really plan on buying any more rifles. Savage builds a pretty good rifle.

First thing I'd figure out is the intended use. There's a HUGE difference between your proposed .204 Ruger and 6.5-284 cartridges.

The .204 is a hoot, but it's pretty close to being purely a varmint cartridge. I like mine, but wouldn't push it past coyote. It's a dandy rock-chuck cartridge though... Very flat shooting, good accuracy, no recoil.

The 6.5-284 is a great long-range, 1000 yard, target cartridge and of course can do a bang up job as a long-range hunting cartridge as well. Factory ammo for it is tough to come by, most folks simply handload for it.

Figure out what YOU want to do with it, then figure which cartridge & rifle combination puts the biggest grin on your face and go for it! I like the looks of the laminated stocks avail on some of the Savage rifles.

My wish is for Savage to bring back their Model 99-F and chamber it in the following cartridges-

243, 250-3000, 260, 284, 7mm-08, 30-30, 300 Savage, 308, 338 Federal, and 358.

I would like to have the 338 Federal and/or the 358 to start out with!

What a handsome well shooting rifle which deserved a better lifespan!

After a little looking, I can get a rifle at factory cost through the Hunter Safety program. I think the 204 would be a blast. It would be fun to shoot, no recoil, less powder to burn, and easy for kids to shoot. I don't have a range over 300 yards around me so the 6.5-284 would not be able to stretch it's legs out.

I bought my 6.5-284 from this gentleman and he is great to deal with, and those prices are fantastic.

One thing I'd tell you about the 6.5-284 is that it is a long range cartridge. If you don't have a range that is at least 600 yards and plan to put on a high quality scope w/ turrets, you won't really be able to tell the difference between it and your 30-06.

On the other hand, with the rifles configured as they are above are going to offer more inherent accuracy potential and that is significant no matter the cartridge.

The older I get the more I love shooting smallish, mild cartridges like my 6-250 or 257 AI. If my 6.5-284 were chambered to 6.5 Creedmoor (basically a 6.5-250 Improved) I'd like shooting it a lot more. Make it a .223 or .204 Ruger and I'd LOVE shooting it more I'm sure!

Of course you could split the difference and go 260 Rem which would also be a fantastic option...

I just say all that as a guy who has "been there, done that" on the 6.5-284 and am not terribly impressed because I don't have a >600 yd range to visit and utilize the rifle/cartridge combination.

Good luck; I look forward to seeing what you choose! One thing is for sure... if you buy a Savage, you'll experience FANTASTIC out of the box accuracy.

You didn't say it had to be a Savage rifle...just a Savage caliber right? I would get one of the Ruger#1's in the 250. :mrgreen:
Seriously...I would love a 99-F in a 358 Winchester. I don't care for the bolts, but the levers have always been a favorite.

Well, now look at all those requests for the 250-3000 :shock: :grin: :grin: . I'm rubbing off on you guys..... So you know thats the Calibre I'm gonna pick. Im not up on all the model designations but an American Classic would be nice. Here's a couple other thoughts. A 250 in the "Predator" would make a great "truck Gun", but I think I would rather have a "weather warrior" with the bottom metal like the Mauser in an American Classic stock.

I dont know anything about the cal. but it might be fun to play around with a .22 high power. CL

A 22 High Power is basically a 25-35 WCF necked down to .228, yes .228 and not the standard .224. I think this was a huge reason why it was and is not more popular today. A 70 grain Semi-spitzer was gettting 2800 fps from a 22" barrel in 1912, not too shabby in my opinion though even experienced marksmen of the day thought it to be marginal on deer-sized game.

I have shot two different models, I think they are a blast to shoot with no recoil and some definate pop. Stay away from take-down models they are typically less accurate while the fixed frame guns are more solid.

Too bad they aren't a .224 bore instead of .228, they may have been more popular for coyotes and such especially being able to hit 2900-3000 fps with 50-55 grain bullets like you could if it was.

Still a very neat piece of Savage history if you have one...

For range time and fun shooting, consider any of their models in .223, 308 or 30-06 due to wide availability of brass and components and sometimes quality surplus ammo.

The lrp looks interesting to me never handled one but I think the HS stock though not a fan will help compliment the rifle nicely. If I were to pick a caliber it would be the 260 rem, 1 creedmore brass is only offered from hornady 2 the 260 has been around awhile and thus has tons of information available as well as lapua brass. I have a savage tactical in .308 I bought for a loaner and first timers long range introduction gun, it shoots well and have since bought a 6.5x47 lapua barrel for it. As far as a low price point mass production rifle I think you will find the savage tough to if not impossible to beat for ACCURACY. Aesthetics, fit and finish and trigger that's a different story.

Well, I have a smaller 6.5, and I'm about to start looking for a bigger 6.5!

Scott the 6.5x47 has been a lot of fun, I did take it out to the 1360 target "12 inch plate" yesterday with some buddies and hit 3 out of five on a rapid fire drill, well four rapid and threw one in the chamber. Very accurate very efficient think I may build a real one. That is the gun my girlfriend will use this year on deer. If I were to build a straight up hunting rifle in 6.5 I think I would go with a 6.5-280 ackley or a 264wm. If I were building a long range target gun in 6.5 it would be the 6.5-284.

I think I would like a LR rifle in something 6.5. I don't know as I would do a ton of hunting with it, but it would be fun for everyone to shoot and would really be fun just to be able to get out and not burn the heck outta barrels and use lb's of powder. Scotty
