What to do

If you decide to re barrel, do a little checking, most smiths seem to charge from $200 and up all depends what you want done to the action, I have a little over $600 into my Remington total price, I did by a top shelf barrel tho, a stainless Bartlien 5R in 25 caliber, #3 counter. This was a contoured blank, Bartlein had them in stock I paid $355 shipped to the smith, He threaded and crowned and fit the barrel, squared the receiver face and lapped the lugs in for $220, add in a ground instead a stamped recoil lug and engraving the caliber on the barrel and it was a tad over, and since the guy was 50 miles away I delivered and picked up the gun, total 3 week, from the day I dropped it off to pick up.
Douglas will chamber and fit a barrel also for about $400 (barrel included in price)
ER Shaw will do it for right around $300( Barrel included in price), and they have been getting pretty darn good reviews the last year or so.
Most if not all barrel manufactures offer the Chambering and fitting to your action, biggest problem with them for me anyway was the time frame, anywhere from 6-16 weeks up to 6 months,, I'm a impatient person, that's why I had it done locally..... seems like you roll the dice with factory gun accuracy anymore, main reason I just didn't by another 25-06, and so far the re barrel job I had done was well worth the investment

I have a good smith down in Virginia that will do the barrel swap/chambering for 200-225. Live a little and pick up a nice Krieger, Bartlein or Brux from Grizzly, Bugholes or Butchs and go to town.. Everyone should have the one rifle they just enjoy shooting. Doesn't sound like that Weatherby is ever going to be your cup of tea.

Truck Driver, I would try again to sell it. Better even to lose a few bucks than have a detached retina for life? Just my $.02 worth.

I also have been looking at the Grizzly Gun Works clamp on muzzle brake with a threaded on redirector. The clamp on could be used on the range and removed when Hunting is my train of thought. My biggest concern is if the clamp ons will stay put and not cause excessive wear on the barrel.
Most muzzle brakes are also available with thread protectors, so you can screw them off and hunt without them.

Note, however, that your POI will differ. My 257 shoots to a point about 6 inches different at 200 yards if I remove the brake.

TD,
You mentioned noise along with the recoil.
FWIW, my 257 Weatherby may be the loudest rifle I own. Wouldn't be without it and love the gun but it is loud. Cool cartridge. The 270 Weatherby is close on trajectory with a little more downrange punch. Either is a good call. Although either will require a new barrel as you are stepping down in size, not up.
The dual electronic hearing protection is what I do. Dr V is dead on with that. It really pays to use good protection. I also wear the in the ear protection when hunting. Believe it or not, the in the ear actually can amplify sound a little until you shoot; then it deadens it. Pretty handy.
By the time you pick up the barrel of your choice, chamber it, and have a smith stick it on you will probably be better off selling and picking up something you can use. BUT,,, Scotty is right that with the smith route you can end up with exactly what you want and probably have a really accurate rifle set up just the way you would like. Your call certainly.

I was thinking about this a bit this morning after seeing a commercial on TV. I watch the Outdoor Network or Sportsman Channel while on my exercise bike.

You could always use a Lead Sled when shooting at the range, as they really do decrease felt recoil. While I'm not always a fan of one I have used one, and it can make a big difference. That would let you shoot at the range without a brake and also in the field. It's less expensive than other options too.

Just a thought on how to have your cake and eat it too.

Not to pick, but it was mentioned that a 180 at 3000fps was moderate for a 300h&h. I have a 180pt moving at 3015 out of a "300 Magnum" and it's no cream puff. That happens to be a model 70 prewar with a steel buttplate. The recoil is stout. Very stout. I also have to load on the warm side to get there. I would say you can of course reach that speed in a 300h&h, but I seriously mean this, I'm missing something if there's a whole lot of daylight "above" that performance threshold.

More than willing to be educated, and not finding fault in the least, but also don't want Rodger thinking the H&H has a ton of further performance beyond that point. It's getting near the roof from what I can tell at that level. Again, if I missed something, and Lord knows that wouldn't be the first time, I'm all eyes/ears on what else can be had from the 300h&h.

Tom, I think there is probably more speed there but your spot on, not without switching powders and I'd think your absolute roof would be the 3075 area. Just a guess, don't load for an H&H but have for its twin, the WSM and the Win Mag and Wby. The WSM and H&H are so close in capacity the differences are usually the cases. The extra 2" of barrel accounts for most of the difference.

That's what I mean....I know there's a little more speed to be had over what I've gotten, but it's comparatively little relative to the overall speed. Just a few percentage points, statistically. To me, 3000 in an H&H or WSM for a 180 is pretty decent. Can't really hope for a LOT more than that, and many settle for less. My WSM is achieving 2975 for the load I'm using with the 180PT, and the H&H is averaging out at 3015. For practical purposes, they're identical, as I don't see 40fps meaning much in any way, lol. Even if I eeked that last 100fps out of the WSM, I'm not sure it'd matter, lol. But either way, once you reach 2950-2975, you're probably within 100fps of the end on either one, I'd think?

Keep it as close to or over 90% fill

Man, all I see when Mike and you post QL is how I need to get off my butt and get the latest edition....

That's Fotis those loads look interesting. You say keep it at 90% case fill so I'm guessing that the bulkier powders are the way to go.

7828 looks real darned good and pretty easy to come by as well.

Fotis, how does the Weatherby respond to lighter loads? Would it be the same if you used a faster powder and loaded it up to higher psi?

My .300 H&H was that Alaskan and had a 26 inch barrel. I doubt that I could get more than 3100 fps with 165 PT's and a 24 inch barrel. Same for the 180 grain, 2950 or whatever is plenty of velocity for that rifle and anymore velocity will not be noticed by any game animal anyhow.

Thanks for the QL Fotis. I saw were you said to keep at 90% case fill. I'm taking it that you will get an erratic discharge or powder burn with anything less?
Have you worked with reduced loads in the 300 Bee if so what were your findings such as accuracy since I have only been able to find accuracy with full pressure loads.
With some cartridges you have a slow node and a fast node where you find your best accuracy. Hoping for a slow or light node. (y)

Why not loading your ammo down? I felt like in a particularly rank (recoil-wise) .300 WIN MAG that I had for years, I always shot better with 150 grain bullets at about 3150 fps than with my heavy loaded 180s. The .300 Roy should still shoot very well with a 180 grainer at .300 H&H velocities without have to rechamber or rebarrel. Might be worth a try friend :) Good luck with whatever you decide!

I have never had much luck on game with 150 gr bullets. For the .300 mags that I have owned (all 3 of them) the 165 Partition does the trick with hunting much better than the 150 grain bullets, especially on the various species of deer that I have killed.
