What would you shoot with a 30-06 loaded with a 165 PT that you would not shoot with a 280 Rem loaded with a 160 gr PT ?

See the other post about the 165 PT dropping the elk, why not a 160 PT from a 280 Rem?

My thought also, just confirming my new liking of the 280.

The 280 seems to be a great little cousin for a 35 Whelen

They both would cover most hunting in NA. The 7mm 160 gr SD is about the same as the 308 180 gr so it will have a edge on penetration.

Jim is right - the .284cal will have the edge on penetration, of all else stays equal in terms of velocity and bullet construction. I wouldn't have any qualms about using the 160gr on anything I'd use the 165gr. I will say I'd be more inclined to use the 180gr on elk sized game were I shooting a .308cal.

There is considerable overlap in utility among cartridges, and the 30-06 loaded with 165 grain PTs accomplishes pretty much what a .280 loaded with 160 grain PTs will accomplish. Either is a fine cartridge and the bullets will kill equally effectively.

I would shoot deer-black bear-bull elk with either and not think twice about it. They are even steven and tried and true. It's always nice to have options though. If you want a long range gun, keep the one you prefer then step up to a mag of some sort and your'e set!

A friend of mine has dropped quite a few moose with his 280 Rem plus mountain goats and blacktailed deer it is a great round. I would happily hunt alpine grizzly too with a 280 Rem and 160 gr Partitions.

Penetration, I'd use a 180, etc I'll just add the 06 and the 165 all exited but one that stopped on the off Side shoulder. 2 holes through lungs is dead, .284, 6.5, .308 will all kill, elk are not tanks!

No difference from my perspective, the 280 is just another of a long list of Cartridges "spawned" from the 06. Ackley and others started necking down/up the 06 case in the late 50's and 60's which resulted in many different cartridges. Most have little or nothing on the 06.

Hah! That ought to get those .270 & .280 guys going...

The .25-06 first came out as a wildcat when, back in the 1930's or something? The .270 was another early one, and it sure caught on, proving itself time and again.

.25-06
6.5-06
.270 Win
.280 Rem & .280AI
.30-06
8mm-06
.338-06
.35 Whelen

And some bigger ones with which I'm not all that familiar... There's not a bad one in the bunch I just listed. Likely forgot something too. Or, as Elkman told us, just go with the original... The .30-06 isn't "boring" to me at all, it's competent & proven, and I get a lot of grins from using the same cartridge (and sometimes the same rifle) that was used by my father and grandfather.

Good stuff has come from that cartridge. No doubt.

You may have missed a few.
.22-06 (alternately .223-06).
.303-06
.375-06 -
.400 Whelen
I remembered the 375 and 400 but cheated an looked on the internet for the other two. There is also some history regarding the .17-06 but I can't document nor remember .17 caliber bullets back that far.

Pretty hard to beat either of those combo's. The 160 and 165 PT are two pretty well rounded bullets. Pushed from the 06 or 280, they are probably one of the more sensible combo's out there.

I don't have no sense anyhow, so I'll stick with the 338..

I don't own a 280 but would not think twice about using it for Elk, especially with a 160 PT.
A lot of different rifles are used today to kill Elk, shot placement is everything no matter the rifle used.

Absolutely nothing! The 284 PT has a slightly higher SD and may penetrate a tad more. The 308 PT a little more frontal mass. I'd feel comfortable with either.

I second that Gerry. I have a friend who regularily take his 280 grizzly hunting, and has dropped grizzlies with it and the 160 NP. I would say the comparrison gets a litlle miss matched when the 30-06 is loaded with the 180gr NP. Just that extra 15gr gives that little extra penitration on a big animal as well as breaking bones should it hit any.
