what's it like?

It is indeed a lot of work having your own place to hunt on. On the other hand it is getting to be the only way to go as time marches on and we keep breeding like rats.
My wife and I have moved several times and every time it was strategic. Each move has been to a bigger ranch and to areas with less people, but where we can not only hunt, but raise our own livestock and grow most of our own hay and vegetables for the table.

I think anyone can make the move and live in the country to avail themselves of hunting out the back door, but you have to be willing to give up other things. You also have to be willing to do what ever you have to to make a living and be good with adventure and change. Most like to stay where things are familiar and work the 9 to 5 with steady, dependable pay checks. Mind you these days not too much is dependable any more, as many have found out.

All the work and sacrifice was worth it though. I don't understand why more don't take the plunge.

Makwa,
Most people are brought up to be selfish. My upbringing was as such. And modern technology has taught them that too. A comfort zone barrier from this upbringing has made people the way they are. So to take the plunge doesn't interest most people. My hat is off to you that you aren't in a classification of a lazy society, coz that's what Americans are.....Lazy.
