What's the perfect Alaskan rifle/round?

My wife makes my shooting bags. Yeah, some were from old blue jeans, but we buy new denim to make them anymore. They are filled with silica sand so there is no dust and they don't hold moisture. She double stitches them so there is no leakage. It is somewhat labour intensive to make them, but they do provide a stable platform.

I think I just found my next project Mike, since I can find my way around a sewing machine. Should make some nice bags and the material is pretty cheap.

They are heavy, which accounts for why they make such a stable platform. I carry six or so each session, using an old milk carton for transportation. There is no movement of my rifles. If you notice the smaller bag looped over the larger at the butt, you will see that it is partially filled to permit fine adjustment with a squeeze. I have other equipment for shooting platform, but I find that I opt for these bags almost every time.
 
I will have to start threading the needles. Need to make up some nice range bags.. Heck, I just gotta find a milk crate too!

It's a little heavy to tote around but much more solid than the previous wood benches. It also has adjustable legs for the uneven ground out in the desert where I shoot.

Is that Kahles scope purple in real life like it looks in the pic?

No, the Grow light, flourescent (shoplight) is hyoing up the red spectrum light in the photograph. The scope is the same color as the 3-9x42 Kahles, a Zeiss Conquest, or my Swarovski. They are all exactly the same color. In sunlight the scope is blue black.

Fortunately I do not have to go anywhere to shoot. I just shoot in my backyard, so weight is not an issue. I built a permanent bench in the back corner of my ATV shed. Have a window that slides open to shoot through and I have target stands out to 400 yards.

Although they have all these fancy gadgets out now to shoot with from the bench, nice sand bags like Dr. Mike's will always be a go to item I think. They are one of those items that you can mold to fit the situation. I just have regular dry sand in mine but I like that idea of using silica sand. Have to see where I can get some around here and make up some new bags. :)

Those plastic milk crates are pretty handy items. I like to strap them on to the racks on my ATV's with some bungee cords. Great for hauling 5 gallon pails of bear bait, fencing supplies and tools or for hauling dead beavers back to the shop during trapping season.

I used to shoot out east, there was a public range out there Kurt, just open range and such, but still a place to shoot. I also used to go out to Palm Desert and shoot. Pretty open out there...
 
Oh, there's places to go, but shooting right out of your shop? That's like heaven, right there! Can you imagine shooting a string of shots, then being able to walk over to your bench and load another five rounds .035" deeper, and be able to shoot it right now?

Yes I have to admit I am lucky to be able to do this and to have a wife that thought it was a good idea. :grin:
