Over the years I have used RCBS and Hornady dies with satisfying results but have been thinking about getting a little higher quality die for this new rifle I have had built. I was thinking about trying Redding dies. I've heard nothing but good things about them. Maybe they will help turn out just a bit better final product with closer tolerances. What say the knowledgeable Nosler group??

David, I really like Forster dies for all of my accurate bolt action rifles. The Forster dies, once set up correctly to partially resize your cases to your chamber, will make exceptional ammo forever, nearly. Set them up once and forget them, except for COAL forever.

I have replaced nearly every die set in my inventory with Redding "S" type full length bushing match dies. They work that well IMO.

Thanks Charlie. I forgot about Forster. I'll have to look and compare. I have a case trimmer of theirs and it's first class.

Another good plug for Redding. Sounds like Redding and Forster are both top of the line. Probably cannot go wrong with either die.

David,

I have Redding dies that are called out as 280 Remington Improved 40* part number 80428.
As I recall, your rifle is chambered for the SAAMI approved 280 Ackley so you will need to get
dies that reflect the SAAMI specification. The SAAMI spec is .014" shorter on the body of the case than the
traditional wildcat 280 AI aka 280 Remington Improved 40*.
Having said that, the correct part number for RCBS is 17001 and Hornady is 546321. I still need to get ahold of Redding to get the correct part number for the SAAMI spec.
I need to buy a set of these dies so I can load for the M48 280AI.

I bought a new concentricty gauge so I've been checking everything. lol

My friend just got some Redding FL .223 dies yesterday, I know it's a small sample, but they are awful. The expander stem was very crooked and if you didn't have about a pound of lube on a case it would stick. We worked on them forever and finally got a sized case without the expander down to .002" and with the expander to .003"ish. To say he is disappointed is an understatement. Prior to straightening everything runout on a sized case was .007", not loaded round, just the brass.

He has some 7mm-08 dies from Redding and they are very true. Loaded rounds were .002"-.005" and he has never had any trouble with them.

Redding dies made after 2011 are the SAAMI version 280 AI

I do like Forster, but I don't believe Forster is making a die set for the 280 AI. Redding makes good dies, though I am not convinced that one can make "better" ammunition than would be possible with either RCBS or Hornady.

The Redding part numbers are available online....I have posted them here somewhere, probably the 280 Ackley reloading thread.

Found it....in the "sell me on the M48" thread.

Redding Competition seater (Redding #: 55428), and full length sizer (Redding #: 91428)

I like the micrometer seating dies...makes playing around with different bullets a lot simpler.

Jim the 80428 according to Redding is the SAAMI spec cartridge according to the email I just got from the folks at Redding. According to the web-site they should have the SAAMI approved name stamped on them also which is just 280 Ackley Improved.

Also...if you order from Midway...never mind the name they have on the dies, go by the Redding part number, it is shown there on the page, right there with the Midway number.

Thanks. I just happened to check Midway and Brownells and it looks like Brownells has the exact same dies for $10.00 less.

David,
My first choice would be Redding Match dies or Hornady Match dies with the optional micrometer seater.

That part number was taken off the die box. My dies are 10 years old, long before SAAMI
approval. They are labeled 280 Remington Improved 40*.
