trying to choose between 2 calibers for the next rifle.

257 wby
or
264 win mag

which one and why

Hard to know the "why" without the "what".

What do you want to do with the gun.
Targets, if so at what distance?
What size animals & at what max range?
Those kind of things.

you must be eyeballing those cdl ss fluted rifles nice looking gun in some classic calibers

Realistically, it's probably six of one, half a dozen of the other, but I'll tell you if it were me, as much as I love a good double radius shoulder, I'd go after the 264WinMag in a 26" tube for elk, if only because you have the 140gr bullet with a very high BC and SD as an option in that caliber.

I have never shot either of the two. I am however a huge 257 fan. SInce you put elk in the mix the extra 20 grains available in a 6.5 may be important.

One thing to consider I hear the 264 win can buck pretty good and I have never heard anyone complain about recoil from a 257bee. If you are recoil sensitive.

I kinda have the bug to get one of those rifles (700 cdlsf) but cant justify it right now.

With the parameters given, I would go with the .264 Winchester.

I have a .257 Weatherby in a Mark V, it's a newer model, but I still haven't been able to get the 117 and 120 grain bullets to stabilize in it. I've had good success with the 100 and 115's though. Talking with the folks at Weatherby, the suggest the 100 grainers, even after switching to a different twist rate barrel in the newer models.

You can't go wrong with either caliber. If they had offered the .264 a few years back, when I bought the Weatherby, I'd most likely have chosen the Winchester.

Hope this helps! Let us know what you decide.

I've owned a 264 WM, My Dad still does. The 130-140gn bullet you can shoot out of them just plain works WELL on game. My son and I have shot deer and elk with the 260rem which is just a couple hundred feet slower then the 264WM.
If I didn't have my Sako 75 in a 270WSM, I would be looking REALLY HARD at that 264 CDL Stainless Fluted w/26" barrel.

I agree with the other fellas, 264 Win Mag if you are going to include elk.

Agreed with the above and the .264 Mag for the larger game.
130gr & 140gr Accubonds and you're pretty well covered for what you've mentioned.

Of the two, I am in complete agreement with the others in recommending the 264 WM, especially since you are throwing elk into the mix.

I personnaly prefer a larger caliber for hunting elk, but to choose from the to calibers you mentioned, I will follow the above responses and say the 264.

Exactly

Here is another vote for the 264. With the 26" tube you should be able to get around 3300 fps with 64 grs H-4831 or 67 grs Retumbo with a 130 gr AccuBond in that 264 Win mag. That one load should fill your ticket on anything you will be hunting.

Break that new 264 Win mag Remington in properly. Shoot a shot and clean with a good copper remover until you get a clean patch. Then do this again for 4 more shots. Then shoot 5 shots and clean until all copper is removed. Do this 3 more times. Then clean very well after every 20 rounds and don't shoot the barrel hot and it will last you a long time.

My buddy has a Remington Sendero in 264 win mag and it is a shooter. I have a custom Rem. 700 with a #4 Shilen 27 3/4" tube and I get 3480 fps average with the above load with great accuracy.

I'd say 264, does more damage than a 7mm rem with the same weight bullets, not sure why, likely SD.

Being a big fan of the 257Wby but I would choose the .264 Win Mag, I think it is the ultimate 6.5mm. In fact, I am toying with the idea of taking my 300Wby Mark V and re-barreling to a 264 Win mag. Our my 30-06 Rugerhawkeye and re-barreling it to a 6mm-284.
