Which rifle would you prefer in another caliber??

Bullet's comment about rebarreling his 300 wby or 30-06 got me wondering: Which rifle that you currently own would you rebarrel to get a caliber you want more?? I like all of my rifles, but which would I want to "improve".

I traded off my M70 pre64 264 for a 375 H&H improved. Most likely not the best trade, but the 264 was a bit weathered and worn too.

Of the rifles I currently own, I would rebarrel my 375 ICL to 7mm RUM or 338 RUM. I'd keep the dies, components & barrel in case I needed a 300 grn Partition @ 2700 FPS at a later date.

I'm torn between the 7 & 338 RUM because the 338 is more what I need caliberwise and has abit more range and barrel life. On the flipside, the 7mm bullets are alot cheaper and easier to find.
I'd have to go 338 RUM because I have a couple other 7's.

Jason,

I wouldn't want to part with any of the cartridges represented in the rifles I now have. However, were I able to find a nice Browning Eurobolt chambered in 7mm RM, I would rebarrel it to 358 Norma, I do believe. And I have thought of finding a good donor action that was chambered in one of the WSMs and rebarreling to 350 WSM (Sambar).

Wow.... good question, but one I've been asking myself for a few months now.... There are for sure two more that I want.... a 6.5 X 47 and or a 6.5 - 06..... take the M7 .260 that I have and rebarrel it to the 6.5 X 47 or my M700 .280 to the 6.5-06........
Issue being I'm having issues doing that... the other two shoot to well to give them up, so thinking a good used donor is the way....??

When I was about 13 grandpa gave me the choice of 4 model 700s a 7mm mag a 280 a 25.06 and a 7mm08 what would any 13 yr old boy take the 7 mag

Later after he passed I began to track down the others my brother has the 7mm 08 which I have almost acquired and finally got my uncle to fess up to having the 25.06 which turned out to be a 700classic. He also has the 280 which is a mountain rifle. Looking back I wish I had chosen it as long as I knew I would have gotten the 25.06 also.

But I would probably rebarrel my 270 wsm to a 257 wsm just because I like fast 25s. It is a 700 lss when I bought it I had the choice of 270 270 wsm 300wsm and 243. My 270 wsm is a killer but maybe for what I paid for it(450 new) I should have got the 270 win for a donor 6.5-06.

Or maybe I should rebarrel my 7 mag to 257bee

Who started this mess now I wont sleep tonight!!!

350 RUM, hehehe.

That would be serious medicine, has anybody necked down a 375 Ruger to .358?? Not quite the RUM, but could be pretty could too. May as well go improved too, custom reamer would be the same price, although it could make the custom dies more expensive.

A 375 Ruger necked down to .358... Now you're talking, Jason! That would just be fun.

nitis,

Your grandpa had good taste in rifles and cartridges! What a great legacy. May I do as well.

Go with the 338 RUM and don't look back. Excellent accuracy and killing power.

I keep thinking about turning my .308 Win/Rem 700 into a short mag... Was really impressed with the .300 WSM...

The biggest thing stopping me is that I shoot the rifle in .308 better than I've ever shot any rifle. Kind of hard for me to get away from that... It's not a whiz-bang cartridge, but it sure works well.

Each time when I get around to re-barreling it, I consider the modest mods required to turn it into a WSM - it would then be an even better long-range hunting rifle...

Well if I was going to do anyting it would either be rebarreling my 338 WM to a 338/375R with a 26" tube, or rebarreling my .22-250 to a 6mm AI with a 26" barrel.

AI's are cool. I traded for a 375 H&H ICL(same idea) & a 22-250 AI.

Lots of fun. I have got the camera charger now too, but have put in 71 hours since I got my truck back 5 days ago, so I'm getting back into the groove too.

338 RUM or Edge. I have to save my pennies for a bit. My next barrel order is going to be a good one

PacNor can't ship to me anymore without an export permit and said permit is only availible to an importer here, at the cost of $195 per order.

My next barrel order will go out after hunting season and will be for at least two. I can't justify the import costs otherwise. If anybody else from Canada wants to split the fees and order at the same time I'd be all for it. Order(prepaid) seperately, imported in same lot, cash and carry at the importer.

Well I pretty much have close to my dream rifle/caliber as it is now. I just bought out my dads half of the 338 EDGE. Its such a pretty gun and a pretty decent LR caliber as well. The only thing I really want for the rifle is a 20 MOA rail so I can shoot some targets at 1760 yards, or try, lol. Other then that, its perfect the way it is, wouldn't change a thing about it.

The only other cartridge I'd really like to own is a super fast .257", 257 STW, 25-300 Win, 257 RUM. I've also always had a thing for the 6.5-06AI.

They would be off a 700 action, 26-28" heavy fluted barrels w/brake, hs precision stock with adj. cheek piece, 6.5-20x50 leupolds, basically get it all set up for LR.

Shouldn't be a problem. Same case, just a different barrel with an 8mm hole.
You could also check with Joe at B. McDanile down the road from you on Pontiac Trail.

6.5-284 The more I know about this round, the more I wanted it that the 06 Ackley build was put on hold in favor of it. Lothar 8 twist well be here soon and it will be mated to a blueprinted Remington action.

A great cartridge, to be certain. It does a fine job with distance shooting. Your rig sounds sweet, indeed.

lothar 8 twist, that should be a great barrel for heavier stuff. Now we just need to beg a little bit more for a 6.5mm 150-155 grain CC or better still AccuBond. With a BC in the .7's It would be a coyote's worst nightmare in the hands of a skilled rifleman.
