Why do we have duplicate rifles?

As I was at the range today shooting, I thought....."these rifle have very similar ballistics. Why do I have both of them?"

280 Rem shooting 160 AB
300 SAUM shooting 165 PT

Then I came out of my rationale state. I have then both because I want them!

And thats all the reason you need.

Dad once asked me why I had so many guns..... said I can only shoot one at a time....

Told him there were 30 days in the month......

Nice, man. You may have just provided me with justification for another '06...

Muchos gracias, amigo!

I don't need another .30-06 but I did not need a 9.3x74R either! Oh well it I ever figure out why and make sense of it, I will probably die on that day?

I have 2 22 LR's. Other than that I do have overlaps but not actual duplicates.

Maybe duplicates was not the best word. Over lap is better

300 WSM - 300 SAUM
35 Whelen - 350 RM
6.5 swede - 6.5 RM
280 Rem - 7mm-08

Overlap? Just in two bore sizes:
7mm:
1x 7-08
2x 7 WSM
2x 7 RM

.30:
.30-30
.300 Savage
.308
2x .30-06
.300 H&H
.300 RSAUM
.300 WSM
.300 WM
.300 Weatherby
.300 RUM

Not as well stocked as BK on the .30

but

4 30-06
2 300 H & H
2 308
1 30/30

we are a bit crowded whe we get to the .40

2 416 rigby
1 458 Lott
1. 457 Magnum
4 45/70
1 double 450/400NE
1 444 marlin

just typing this makes me think we are one sandwich short of a picnic

We all have our own way of rationalizing, mine is there are 6 in our immediate family that hunt and we hunt at the same time. Wife, mother, Uncle, two children and myself. It also makes it easier that everyone hunts. when it is time to buy another rifle I get encouragement instead of grief

Yes!

Mine is the same as government building infrastructure... it's never going to be cheaper than it is right now.

I cleaned house on my pile of rifles a few years back.

Pulled them all out of the safe and from behind closet doors, and from under the bed, and everywhere else I'd stashed them... Lined 'em all up and asked myself "How many ways do I need to kill a deer?"

So I sold quite a few. Still have too many in my opinion, but some are "family rifles" with which I'll never part, and which my sons may someday need or want. So... Although I'd kind of like to get down to a .22, a muzzle loader, a target/varmint rifle and a couple of hunting rifles - I'm not sure I'll ever really make that happen.

Overlap in rifles? Oh yeah, I've got overlap... Heck in .30 cal alone (and this is after The Great Clear Out) I've got:

.30-30
.308 Win
.30-06
.300 WSM

Now doggone it, there's a lot of difference between the .30-30 and the .300 WSM, but the .308, .30-06 and the .300 WSM all have some Serious Overlap going on...

And of course at least in recent years I just grab the little .25-06 when I'm going hunting anyway. It was a bit of a struggle to con myself into grabbing the .308 Win last year for whitetail, almost just took the .25-06, yet again.

"Why do we have duplicate rifles?" Let me wax philosophical for a moment. We would never think of having "duplicate" wives. Most of our wives would put an end to such fantasizing rather quickly. Few of us are able to afford duplicate houses, or even duplicate cars. We likely have duplicate items of clothing or duplicate pairs of shoes; we've told ourselves that we need these, justifying the acquisitions through our own rationalization. We are even likely to have duplicate tools. We couldn't find the one we needed at one point, and so we picked up another. Reading entries on this forum, it is apparent that many of us have duplicate bullets and duplicate powders. That little tweak of a load to permit us to shoot a 0.95 inch group justifies picking up something slightly different when we've been shooting one inch groups. We also know that if we pick up a rifle chambered in another cartridge, we will be able to use what we have ... until we "need" something that will refine the accuracy just a bit. So, ultimately, we find ways to justify a new acquisition. "The price was great!" "I've always wanted want of these, ever since I was a kid." "I had some brass lying around that I picked up and needed to use it." "There is a spare scope in my safe, and I didn't want to sell it." When all is said and done, we have duplicate rifles because we can. We are restless, and we are always looking for the next challenge. It defines us as human beings. Some of us have owned multiple rifles in the same cartridge. We had one shooting tiny bug holes and then sold it, buying another at some point later. The challenge drove us on. We don't need to justify our acquisitions--but we almost always do so. If the pursuit isn't impinging on our family, our work or our relationship to the rest of mankind, it is a pleasant diversion. Having said all this, I guess in the final analysis, we are infected with a fine and pleasant misery.

Lots of good repsonses... I tend to accumalate rifles that I find interesting and then in the pursuit of one fine "Super Shootin' Stick' sell off several to fund what would be an otherwise obscene purchase (at least according to my VP of Finance and Acquisitions) .

My collection isn't growing much in number but it is certainly growing in quality.

I may end my stay on this mortal coil with only a couple of rifles in the safe but they will be downright spectacular....

Good point! I should imagine that this is the aspiration for many of us.

My theory is to have a solid back up. I never take just one rifle to camp. I've had tomany bad things happen while hunting to my primary rifle, and usually it's a long drive home to get the spare.

Heck sometimes a guy needs three or four back ups...right?
