My wife just filled her cow tag. One of the fastest one shot kills I've ever seen on a moose! 270 Winchester with 130gr TTSX @ 3025fps. Gotta start the work now, will share story later today.

Congrats on the cow! Great shooting on your wife's behalf. Awesome cartridge/rifle combo. Doesn't get much more capable.

Sorry buddy, meant cow... Had elk on the brain...

Either way. Awesome deal.

That looks like some fine eating and a great job by your wife putting the meat on the table :!: (y)

That's awesome, congrats to her and of course you as well for picking a good one :)

That's a really blonde moose, we rarely see them that color here. Looks cool........

OK, finally got home so I have time to tell the tale.

We got a pretty good snow storm last night. Drove thru 8-22” of snow with a set of doubles for 400 miles on the way home, it made for a long night playing in the snow. The matsu valley, where my wifes tag was for didn’t get anywhere near that much snow but still got a little dusting 2-3" so while on the way back to anchorage from up north I was seeing a lot of moose tracks. Called my wife and told her to call in sick, today would be a great day to fill her cow tag.

Got out to the hunt area right after first light and drove to an area where we had seen a couple of moose a few weeks ago, That time we happened on them only 80 yards from the road. I grabbed her rifle and the primes tripod trigger stick and we stepped off into the brush. I got her set up on the sticks.

“whenever your ready, just take your time. put the crosshairs on the shoulder and touch it off”.................”no rush, just get settled in and take your shot”.......................”ok, its behind a tree, wait until it comes out and take your shot whenever your comfortable”....................”ok, its gone now, lets head back to the truck”. She had gotten herself locked up solid in “moose fever” and just stood there watching the cow until it wandered away. She was pretty disgusted with herself but I told her not to worry we had lots of time.

This morning I drove to the area we had saw this large blond moose. We came across a couple of fresh tracks in the new flufly snow so I decided we should mosey on back and take a look around. A little over a quarter of a mile from the truck I saw that blond back sticking up over the brush. The fresh snow did a good job of masking our sound and we where able to get to within 100 yards before the large cow caught wind of us. I had my wife set up on the tripod and the cow was standing looking at us. It was a good broadside shot.

“go ahead, whenever your ready, right behind the shoulder”.............”ok on three” she said and then counted to three........... at about 12 I was getting flashbacks of last time. I was about to say something when she shot.

At the shot the cow just disappeared, straight down, like it was struck by lightening. I only remember one other moose dropping that fast at the shot and it was also a woman shooting a 270. It must be some sort of magical combination. It never even kicked, I was really impressed and glad because I was a little worried that a bad experince might just make this the last time she hunted.

She hit the cow high on the shoulder, breaking both shoulders and shredding the lungs. The shot must have been close enough to where the spine drops down above the shoudler that the shock to the spine accounted for the extreme reaction. I was kinda hoping that we I might be able to actually recover one of those barnes TTSX given the small bullet and large animal but alas like every other TTSX or TSX I have thrown at a game animal for all I know its still orbitting the earth. Those damn things penetrate like crazy.

It took me about 3 hours to cut it up and haul it out on a little sled I had taken. She wanted to save the hide and have it tanned so it took a little longer than usual. That blond color isn’t very common here either so it was a good one to get tanned. Those humps of grass are murder on your back while pulling a sled loaded with meat. So now I’m home, haven’t slept in 30+ hours and have to take care of all this meat. I guess there are worse things that can happen.

Great story. Glad she was able to pull the trigger, it is a lot different from shooting at a target. Should get easier from now on. That hide will look great tanned and also cover a lot of area  The 270 Win 130 gr TTSX combo obviously is up to the task, modern bullets are pretty amazing.

Congratulations to your wife! She did the job just right. I don't doubt that you are plenty tired. Still, your lady did a good job ensuring that the family has meat this winter. Again, congratulations on the shot. Consequently, I've always had a tendency to shoot moose in the spine. Going for a high shoulder shot and the spine being somewhat lower on the hump, I have a tendency to drop them right there (not even trying to do so) because I spine them.

Awsome story, congrats to your wife on a great shot, and nice cow! (y)

30 pints of canned moose and 228 pounds of meat dropped off at processor to get ground and made into burger, breakfast sausage and jalapeño/cheese moose dogs. Should fill the freezer up for a while.

Not a bad haul! That'll help with the grocery bill. :)

Sweet! I have to add that your hunting "Pardner" is prettier than mine are, ha! I was pleased to hear how well the 130 TTSX did in the .270. I like the TSX/TTSX too, though never loaded any in my 270. My 270 BAR likes the discontinued (natch) Federal 110TTSX factory load. Stay safe, especially pulling doubles in the snow...bummer.

That's GREAT!

Congratulations - and yes - those doggone Barnes TSX bullets penetrate like crazy. I suspect the same is true of the Nosler E-Tip and other mono-metal designs.

Full freezer now eh?
