What do you wildcats use for dies? I see you can get most anything from rcbs but that brings along a hefty price. Lets say I am doing something fairly simple say a 257 wsm someone was trying to tell me I could use a certain brand of die and change out the neck sizer part. does this sound right? I want to say it was the hornady setup?

sorry for the green horn question trying to learn all I can you are all great!

For a 257WSM, I use a 300WSM Redding body die for FL sizing and bumping the shoulder. For neck sizing I use a 300WSM bushing neck die with the necessary 25 cal. bushing.Rick.

can you change out part of an rcbs like a bushing to make it work?

I think RCBS bushing only fits their dies. Wilson/Redding bushing are interchangeable.

Don't mind me saying this at some point you will need to FL size and depending on which case you use (the 270WSM is different than the 300WSM/325WSM) you could send JLC a Redding body die along with fire case and have him fit it to the body die. http://www.6mmbr.com/catalog/item/1433308/892435.htm

They sell blank neck bushing dies alot of times easy for the gunsmith who chambers your wildcat to use the same reamer to make a neck die and seater http://newlonprecision.com/

Rifle: Redding, Forster, Wilson. Pistols: Hornady.. I have all brands, but those are my preferred..

Bush dies are great for working with custom rigs or trying to ween the mostest out of a factory gun by neck sizing only or changing neck tension or trying to eliminate runout.... IF you take the plunge, buy carbide bushes..... Schweet to use carbide.....

you will still reach the point where you have to bump the shoulder. and you will still need a seater die, so your best bet is send a couple fired cases to RCBS and they'll make your dies, The dies I get from the smiths who build my wildcats are not too bad, never paid over 125 bucks for a standard 2 die set.
however you can get your smith to ream you a resizer.

NTIS,

Rephrase your question plz. Are you asking about dies for wildcats? Or are you asking what we, "wildcats" use for dies? The answers are going both ways....

Just making sure your question gets the right attention...

I want to know about dies for wildcat calibers specifically the type you can change out the bushing for a basic neck up or down thing like the 257/300wsm the 6.5 stw etc

RidgeRunner pretty much summed it up for ya and as 30-338 said there are some cartridges that are same body, but at some point you will need that specific die.

Just wanting to neck up or down a caliber can be done with other dies/diff bushes or expander mandrels. So yes, you can use other dies to do basic case forming, but you still will need to get the specific die for the wildcat you have. Unless all you want to do is shoot fireform loads or use the case till its too tight.

Good question and lots of good answers. Do a google on "Wildcat case forming" and you'll find a ton more info. Now if you have a specific case in mind, fire back and answers can be more specific too..

Good luck.

You may not need any speciality dies if you are just modifying the neck. I have a 300WSM, Redding body die, Type "S" neck bushing die and competition seater. Then I had a 257WSM built. I change the bushing in the neck die for each caliber and use the body die for sizing the cases with bumping the shoulder. For a seating die, used a 257Roberts Redding competition die and had the smith run the reamer into the sleeve. He may have had to shorten the die/sleeve, don't remember. Set up this way, I load for both the 300 and 257WSMs without having to purchase custom dies.Rick.

Redding list about 70 some calibers that they make neck bushing dies for so everyone of those cases can be necked up or down. I took the 280AI case necked it up to 30cal then down to 270 did the same with the 284 down to 22cal/6mm up to 6.5.

I'll only make one comment about the cost of dies. When I consider how much money I have invested in one of my wildcat calibers the price of custom dies is pretty cheap.

good point the cost is all relative

Kinda like the guy who spends 500 for a tag an license to go out of state 1000 for a rifle 600 for a scope 35000 for a truck all to go hunting but scoffs at 50 bucks for 1 box of shells

I was just curious if and how it could be done

also theoretically I could get 270 wsm dies change the neck bushing and load for my 257 wsm
