Winchester 88

Anyone else have load development experience with the model 88 in 308 Win? I picked up on filmjunmkie4ever s comment about flat base bullets. I have a friend who recently acquired a model 88 in 308 and we've tried 3 or 4 different bullets, mostly varget and CFR223 and various primers along with all kinds of different bullet seating depths (nothing beyond mag length) and best we've gotten is 1 1/2 -2 " 3 shot groups. That said we have NOT tried a non - boattail bullet; YET !! Seems a lot of the better groups are two shots nearly touching and then one thrown and inch or two out.

Been mentioning to my friend to acquire a torque screw driver so we can try some different pressure on the action/barrel. For those of you who don't know these guns only have one screw holding the action in the stock! And yes, the trigger is bad.

Any suggestions please holler. Thx

I always got my best groups with my .308 and flat based 165 bullets using IMR 4064 powder. I don't know why but ball powder was not the best for my #1 Ruger rifle.
