I am with you Fotis. I have wanted a 375 H&H but with the Whelen and the 338, I haven't really pushed it. If I could ever run across one of these, I would be in hog heaven I believe.

The new FN built Winchester Model 70's are really nice rifles. I like everything about them. Have been tempted to buy one a few times, just for the heck of it - and it may come to that because I sure don't "need" it.

Was all hot to buy a new one in 7mm Rem mag, .30-06 or .300 WSM. Opened up the gun safe to see what I'd trade or sell in order to buy the new Model 70, and couldn't find any rifle that I was willing to give up anymore...

My youngest son told me I was crazy when I mentioned maybe trading the .25-06 Rem 700 for a new Model 70. He made his point by showing me the four sets of mule deer antlers that 700 has put on the wall over the past few years. Good point.

So.. Perhaps one of these days I'll just treat myself to a new Model 70, just for the heck of it. Just happen to have a nice old 2-7x Redfield sitting here, on a Leupold base cut for a long action Win Model 70... Hmmmm...

I've had several Model 70's in the past, and still have one, a .300 WSM. The ones sent on their way were a .25-06 "classic" - beautiful gun, but it wouldn't group, no matter what I did. Did stop short of re-barreling it. A 7mm Rem mag, a .300 Win mag and a match rifle in .308 Win. They were from the old factory, and I found QC was lacking a bit, except in the match rifle - which had been completely built up by a master rifle maker, Jim Cloward. The 7mm and .300 mag Win 70's and I just failed to bond. They weren't bad rifles, just mediocre. Stainless steel, synthetic stocks and the controlled round feed. Good enough, but not outstanding in any way, so off they went. Wish I could have made that .25-06 shoot though - it was a beauty. Within a few months of it going down the road, Remington came out with the 700 CDL, and that's when I went back to Big Green for my primary hunting rifle. Back then I was looking for the kind of Model 70 that is being built now, but not finding it.

From everything I've seen and heard, the new rifles are really very good.

That would be all kinds of cool, but I think there's a better chance of me winning the Iron Man, NY Marathon and Boston Marathon in the same year than Winchester offering a 6mm. .280, maybe...

Come on, Whelen fans. We need to get a pool together to get an M70 Whelen built for Scotty, so we can then buy the factory Whelen that will inevitably come after Scotty gets it.

If they offered an Extreme Weather version of that, I'd be on it like flies on doo-doo. Heck, even just build that one!

Guy, I've played around with my '06 Featherweight a little bit, and I firmly believe that if you give one of the SC built rifles a fondle, you'll fall head over heels for it. They are that nice.

I agree, the SC made M70's are pretty slick. I like their Sporters a bunch. I say that, while I sit here cleaning my older Sporter Classic 264! I like them all. I have had very little trouble with any of the older Winchesters. Some require a little floating or bedding, but that is the extent of it. I do know they take some shooting to smooth out the bores though. Liberal amounts of Iosso gets used to speed it along till then though...

No doubt about it, Winchester is out for market share. It is great to see the attention going into these rifles, and their new releases are easy to get excited about.
 
It may just be that Remington is now looking forward (from behind) at the new wave of well-built firearms from Winchester :wink: . And with all those new "OLD" calibers leading the pack :grin: .

WSM is always my first 7mm choice, followed by the 7mm rem maggy
 
Winchester is offering both the 7WSM and the 7RM in their lineup this year.

That's little 7WSM is making some great inroads to favorite cartridge lately. Really an easy shooter.
