Hey Guys,
I have a Winchester Model 70 (257 Roberts) that I just picked up. How do I determine if it is a pre-64 or not?
Mike

Mike, PM me the serial# an i will tell you when it was made. I had a collection of them at one time. I was at a gun show this past weekend with a buddy of mind and he bought a Pre 64 model 70 feather weight in 270 cal. that was made in 1960. It was new in the box with all the papers and the hanging tag. Cost= $3900.00

There are two easy ways to ID a pre-64 win model 70. Now these are not the only ways and the serial number is the best way. They did have an knurl just forward of the chamber on the barrel that the rear site usually was mounted on and was supposed to be a balancer in theory. Also, They had a half mauser claw controled feed action. Here are pictures of my 264 pre 64 model 70.

That is what the knurl looks like. The btm pic is the half claw action.

That rifle is pretty beat up, but shoots very well.

The action is the easyest way to tell because the featherweight pre 64 M70 didn't have the knurl on the barrel.
