Wolves Delisted in Wyoming

lions killing wolves would suggest very high competition & high populations of both straining the available prey...

That seems quite accurate from the limited report available.

Great news fellas!
Here in MI, the DNR is working on a season as early as this year.

That is excellent news, Jim. Prepare to battle the antis, however, before the season is finalized.

Me too...I've been mad about the wolves ever since I figured out what they have done to the elk population...my dream is to go elk hunting at least once before my time is up, been daydreaming about it since I was a teenager reading Outdoor Life magazines during class (I know, I know).

I'd be more than willing to help you guys bring the wolf population down a few notches...they'd make some good practice for me and my newly assembled 30-06 (not quite finished...but soon will be)

Lions vs. wolves...I'm rooting for the cats, they're not near as disruptive to the balance...and they mainly eat deer (I could be wrong...but I believe most places have enough deer to sustain them)

We don't have wolves in my neck of the woods (near the Smokey Mountains)...but there has always been a small population of cats there at home, rarely seen, sometimes heard...but they've never been a problem.

In my 39 years...I've actually laid my eyes on 2 cats, but see their sign quite often.

In 60 years of hunting the lower 48 and eastern Canada, I have seen quite a few bobcat and lynx, one Cougar a grown male, and one wolf a female. I worked around and in the area of a pack of wolves in Northern Quebac and heard them every day, saw their tracks but never a wolf. The wolf that I saw was in Nevada in the mountains. Washington has a few wolves in the Northern Cascades but we have many more cougar and black bears than wolves.

Lady down the street from us, had a young, grown, male cougar walk into her kitchen last summer. It was hungry.

I hope it happens Jim. I know my other buddies that live in the UP seem to be getting hammered by wolves. Hope they allow you to thin em out some.

I've seen probably 40-50 wolves in the last 6-7 years and the sad thing is I never saw one last year. I saw several tracks. The reason it is sad is because in the place I deer hunt I would see them, sometimes several times a year, is void of game almost entirely. It use to have a rather large elk population which was pretty much gone by '07/'08. Last year I hunted opening day and say 3 does way down low. In the early to mid 2000's I'd see as many as 12-15 bucks in the high country. Since then the number has been dropping every year.

In a different area I did hear a pack two mornings in a row when I took my buddy muzzleloader hunting. The elk population is pretty severely depressed there as well. In 2009 when I shot my wolf the head wolf biologist told me that the elk population in that area had been in decline since about 2007. They had a general muzzleloader hunt then it became a drawing for 50 tags. There use to be over 600 people that would hunt the general season. Now it's not even that easy to shoot a elk if you draw and the odds of drawing are about 1 in 6. I'm not sure why they don't shut down the whole season rather than reduce the numbers anymore (well I'm lying....they won't shut it down because tag sales are revenue and here it's all about the revenue). Fish and Game has been mismanaging the game for 20+ years and now that it's biting them in the rear they are trying to tap into the states general fund for money.

The frustratingly ironic part of this wolf situation is that hunters and sportsmen are responsibile for both the numbers of deer/elk we had and the funding to manage them, and that hunters and sportsmen now are now paying double to manage wolves.

Sounds like we need to get the radio frequencies used for the collars....

If anyone stumbles across a dead wolf or mountain lion, she would be interested in hearing about that too.

Gene, I enjoyed reading the public comments at the end of the story...

BeeTee,

Thanks for pointing out the comments. Obviously, there are some strong sentiments among the locals--and with good reason!
