I am planning on making a short, October opening weekend elk hunt with my SIL and a couple buddies. I have hunted this area before, and luckily for me, it is a long ridge top with aspen/dark timber edge. I will be taking my 35 Whelen AI and the 310sn/2400 fps loading I have on hand. I have it set on zero/100yds from my last pig hunt with it. To save a lot of time/ammo, if I set my zero +2" @100, what do you think my 'zero range" would be...150, 175? I don't want to go higher as I'm likely to only get a running shot, i.e. fast and dirty! I am going to the range in a few days to set this thing up. I've been so busy I didn't plan on elk hunting this year and was playing with other rifles, I have 27rds ready with the 310. Plus, I want to shoot it at 200 to see if it still hits "point on". It does bugholes at 100 and of course, slew the Michigan Monster Sow at 35 steps! ha

After Bible Study tonight I dug around and found some more ammo. I am fortunate in that this rifle shoots the 200X, 200TTSX in the same group and the 250X an inch lower. I still have ten of the 250X loads and around 20 or so of both the 200X and 200TTSX. I think I'll set up for them as I know what they will do further out. I like the 310 but it just isn't making me feel "ready" for a 250 yd shot. I'm also getting to shoot my 200 Speer/338 Federal loads and my 7mm Rem Mag 175 ABLR loads. The Hawkeye is light enough to take too, but the 7mm Mag is a tad heavier than I want to drag around at 9000ft! ha

Jeeze Jim, I'd think 3" high at 100 wouldn't be too hard at all for an elk.

I'd love to hear that big 310 whomp an elk... Those things look awesome in the bullet tests.

I'll bet that 310 would thump them.
6.5 low at 250 and 13.5 at 300 isn't too bad for that weight IMO with your 2" high at 100 setting.
Be interesting to see what that 310 would do in your Newton Scotty.

Jim sent me a few of them. Betting it would get nearly 2600 though... That would crush animals I believe. Might be fun to run one in the jugs from the Newton.

I agree on the trajectory. That's an easy 300 yard elk killer.

Well I made it to the range and made some interesting "observations". I had 26 200X ( older secant ogive) rounds that were loaded back in early 2002. I also had seven that were loaded about six years ago. The ones loaded in early 2002 had been taken to South Africa the summer of 2002, trucked around South Africa a week or so, brought home and trucked out to the west Utah desert a couple times, then put away. At loading (58gr/H322/BR2) they went 2970fps average with single digit ES. They also shot into .75" or less (if I held my mouth right!) Today they went 2991 av, and 1.5". The seven "newer" rounds went 2968 and .75". This made me think that the coating on the kernels of H322 were beginning to wear off and increase the burn rate a tad. Vibration can do that easily, and between age, flying to South Africa and back and in between the break down had begun. The six year old 200X dialed right in of course, so I put it +2"@100. I'm good to go. I didn't even fire the 20yr old 250X loads with 53.5gr AA2015br, ha.

I forgot to add that even with my 200X +2@100 my Woodleighs still hit zero and an inch to the left, so I am still good for close range, and will slip one up the spout if I am sitting in a closer area. I too want to know what this puppy will do, I just want to hedge my bet...being fat an older I am looking for an "edge", ha. When I got this rifle back in '98, I had it blueprinted, rechambered to the AI, Shilen trigger added and had it cryogenically treated, then moly coated. I had the brake put on after my neck surgery in 2000. It has been a consistent shooter, putting all bullet weights into 3" or less with same zero...what a jewel!

That would make it hard to not love Jim. Sounds like the perfect set up to me.

Oh yes, thanks DWH for the ballistic chart! It would seem that 310 at 2400 shoots a bit flatter than I had thought! I am going to put one up the spout and follow it with the 200X. I can always ease it out if I spot a bull further out, and if he's running, well heck, I'll give it a SWAG!

It worked great on that 200# hog! I found out that I have a Guest Minister coming in that weekend, so had to cancel my elk hunt. I am going to find "something" to hunt later this winter, ha! I can, for sure, go camp pout in the West Desert and spend a week calling/hunting coyotes at the very least! I'd like to go to MO and shoot one of those 'wooly hogs" with my buddy from Joplin. Its at High Adventure Ranch up near Springfield.

That´s what will happened. I use 300grain .333cal bullets for larger game and one can actually hear very clearly hear the bullet impact. I have experienced quit a few times the bullet is pushing air and then the "Whomp n´bumb".

I have shot the Woodleigh 310grain in an old Rigby rifle but never on game. I have no doubt an elk will be drained for blood and too sick to complain about it.

I'm impressed that the Whelen is handling such a heavy bullet.

Often I've read that it's best with 250 grain or lighter bullets.

Standard twist on your rifle?

Guy

Hey there Guy, hope the neck is healing well and (not aching too bad when the storms come in, ha) Its the standard 1/16" Rem 700 Classic but reamed to the Ackley Improved. I get the 2400fps with 55gr R15/BR2, and I too was surprised at its accuracy! I was thinking one day how well this rifle shot the original 250X, a very long bullet itself. I think between the long throat and the slower twist ( I learned from the Marlin 1/38" of the 444 & 45/70 that speed is your friend with a slower twist!) I am getting a fast enough spin on this Woodleigh. I haven't tried it at 200 ( I will next time I go to the range though) but it hits spot on at 100 and at 30yds or so in that hog! That's why I used it on that hunt, to see if it would open up or tumble. It was perfection. I don't know if a standard Whelen could get it going fast enough, but in a 24" bbl it might? Of course, I would expect any faster twist to work with it. I know that some "factory" .375 H&H 300gr loads are only going around 2400 to 2500 too, so I feel pretty good about this load. But listen to this, with 61gr R15 and a Fed 215M primer I get a solid 2750fps with the 250 Partition! Yes, its a hot load, but this rifle handles it well, I just don't use it, ha. Between my 200X and this 310, I feel pretty well ready for anything, ha. Are you shooting the 25/06 this year?
