WY "left-over tags"

SOOOOOO, Me, my bro, and a bunch of other guys had been planning on doing this. We were looking at some speed goat buck tags. The unit had a reported 184 left over tags a few days ago. We hit submit at 8:00.30 this morning and they were gone

Lesson learned: APPLY FOR TAGS!

Kind of bummed about it. Hope we have better luck with the doe tags.

We got three cow tags this morning, I am jacked! Two bull tags and a cow tag, it will be a great season!!!!!

MAN!!! That is EXCELLENT Bill! Great job, you all scored well! Hopefully you are knee deep in elk here shortly!

You done good, Bill. Super to know that someone such as yourself scored these.

My buddy and I just got 4 doe antelope tags each. Time to test some bullets and shoot some long range. I know my Lott is going to go and most likely my .338 Edge.

Good show on securing the antelope tags. That should make for some good dining during this coming year.

You know Mike I've tried eating antelope before and I'd imagine the bunghole (I've never tried one) would be better eating. I'm going to try boning them out on the spot this time to see if they are edible. Many people have said they are really good if they aren't run before they are shot and to make sure you keep the hair off of the meat. Well antelope hair falls out like a dog with a heavy coat shedding. So I'm not real sure how you do that but I'll give it a go AGAIN. I use to go antelope hunting every year in Wyoming.

I want to try and get two lined up just right and fill two tags with one shot using my Lott. It should be doable with the Lott it's just getting them to line up (truth be told I could probably get 3 or 4 if they all lined up perfectly and I used a heavier bullet). It would be pretty cool to fill 4 tags with one shot but that wouldn't leave any tags to boom at long range. It would be a good bullet test though.

I can't say I've had your negative experience with antelope! All I've eaten were good. I won't tell you that I prefer them to moose, or elk, or whitetail, but they were palatable. They do make fine jerky and sausage, as well. I do use two separate sets of knives on all game; the set that touches hair never touches meat, and vice versa. Also, you are correct that adrenaline pumping is never going to create a gustagory delight.

Been pretty lucky I guess....I have pretty much always shot goats who were standing still trying to figure out what I was. I would suspect what was mentioned re Arenaline is correct. My wifes uncle has shot dozens of antelope and he has gotten to the point where he bones them out right on the hide and the meat goes right to the cooler. Probably helps too. I have a great Marinade recipie that I really enjoy. I use it on "stew meat" and nobody has ever complained. All that said, it can be "different" and occasionally "stronger" than other meats. and I know one guy who hunts them with a bow and just refuses to eat them. He says, " I had way too much of that $h*T as a kid". It was all they could afford, I expect. CL

In my short time here on the planet I have shot two Antelope. I found both to be excellent eating. They were both killed early in the morning, not the same day. I cleaned them immediately and hung them in a juniper over a creek. I then washed them both with water and a little vinegar. Then covered them with dry cheesecloth and let them cool. Next day cut and wrapped. The family loved them both, and I thought the backstrap tasted similar to lamb chops.
Never had the desire to kill another however.

I've shot quite a few that my dog wouldn't even eat and I typically skin them immediately. Believe it or not the best antelope I've had is the heart out of a doe. I'm not usually a organ eater but it was at least edible how my buddy cooked it. I'll bone these out and get them in a cooler to see if they will be good enough to make anything but dog food/jerky. I'll even use two different knives to skin them and bone them like others have mentioned.

My buddy wants me to make a hanger that slides in the hitch to make it easier to skin them. So I'll probably do that to try and keep them as clean as possible.

I got one Buck Tag and four Doe tags.
The doe tags were purchased online as we didn't draw the hunt we put in for as a first choice with a Buck and two Doe tags. This will be my first foray to WY and I'm really looking forward to it.
