Thanks to the Forum I have had the pleasure of meeting a new friend, NYDAN. I have also had the pleasure of meeting a Canadian gentleman who I shall identify as John_K while hunting at Upper Canyon Outfitters in Montana in 2014. John and I have maintained a casual connection in the interim and decided it would be nice to hunt together this fall for big NY Whitetail bucks.

Not having my personal hunting preserve to host John, I approached NYDAN with the possibility of hunting his 267 acre preserve at the end of the rifle season. Dan graciously consented and offered his Mother's house which is now vacant.

Dan went above and beyond being a good host. He wrote out a list of the 8 different shooting huts/blinds and the conditions in which each would likely be productive, ie. north wind/evening.
John was very impressed by the variety of options and varied terrain available, level valley to hilltops, and the quality of the blinds. John said that Dan's farm is the most beautifully maintained hunting property that he has been to..

John said the his experience in Whitetail hunting in Ontario usually yields less than a handful of deer sightings in a season. In the 4 days that we hunted Dan's preserve he saw in excess of 50 different deer of which four were bucks, none of which were shooters.

Yesterday, our last day to hunt Dan put us on watch while he bird dogged for us. John saw two bucks and I shot a nice Whitetail doe to support a Youth Group church function. Dan and John both agreed that if I had shot her with a 35 Wilhelm in addition to being DRT, she likely would have been dressed out too... (y).

John and I both enjoyed Dan's Yankee Hospitality, and an awesome 4 days. Now I will end this post and leave it to Dan to fill in the details.

Awesome story. congratulations on the doe.

Great story Dan. I do enjoy hunting in NY a whole lot myself. Glad to see you all hunting together up there. I've met some great friends from this place.

That is a great example of the generous spirit I've witnessed in both Canada and the United States over and over. I've heard so many negative things even about New York City. We lived in Westchester County (Tuckahoe) when I began doctoral studies at Einstein. The people I met during my time there were among some of the finest people imaginable. There are always grinches, and we may remember them; but great people outnumber the idiots every time. Congratulations to Dan and to Rol for being gentlemen!

In all my travels thru the state of NY I really never met anyone who wasn't friendly or helpful except for maybe 1 or 2. It's a great state once you get away from the big cities the people are fantastic. I could live there if you could give NY City to Jersey and get rid of the idiot politicians.

If one was able to divest NY or NYC, it would get rid of most of the idiot politicians! Cities cause a drain on the brain, transforming otherwise fine people into first-class idiots. :?

It was a real pleasure having Roland and John here for a few days. They treated me as if I was the guest instead of the host. Plus they brought all kinds of great food that they shared with Tina and I. Tina had never had elk so she was pretty impressed with the elk roast and the elk lasagna. I just loved everything. Roland also brought wine for the meals and John brought some top shelf bourbon. Needless to say, we had some mighty fine meals. However, poor Roland was ribbed incessantly about getting a 35 Whelen. I think he is starting to soften up.

Also, it was great to host experienced and safety conscious hunters. It makes for a more relaxed hunt when you know you can trust the hunters and that they will always be at the agreed upon location.

From the time we met Roland has always offered to help around here. Sometimes he would even initiate a planned work day. So, I was happy that I could finally return the favors and host him and John for a few days.

Here are a couple of photos of the 180 PT that Roland used. The deer was just slightly quartering toward him. The bullet traveled diagonally through the deer and was recovered in the opposite hind quarter. Of course, she was DRT. I was not there went they butchered the deer, but I believe they said the bullet took out a section of spine.

John is another fine example of the great people who populate Ontario. I feel fortunate to have met a new friend through Roland. I hope to meet up again with John when I travel to Ontario for my winter snowmobiling vacation.

It's great when guys can meet up and have a great time, congratulations to Roland as well.

Dan has exaggerated a bit about the food we brought along.. The shot was as Dan described but through the front shoulder and below the spine, missed the tenderloins, and did not disturb the innards. I was near the end of the boning and trimming process when this bullet popped out of a piece that I was working on. I had not found an exit hole and was concerned about the bullet's whereabouts as I was taking the meat to a friend to be ground into burger, and donating much of it to a church function, (chili cook-off) put together by our Youth Group.. What a relief to find the bullet.

I assume the front of the Partition was in the entails left in the woods after breaking the shoulder as I found no evidence in the meat that I trimmed.

If I decide to change from using the 180 Partition I may drop back to 165's just to see if they are more accurate, but I hesitate to mess with success. Penetration in the right spot is key.

Hard to beat the results but man, seems like the 165's give you a little more speed. The 165 AB was very impressive to me on elk as well from an 06.

Still, cool recovery!
