yotes and the 300rum

I have been wanting to try my gun on yotes its a 300ultramag what grain of bullet would work best and with the smallest hole. Is it possible. And has anyone tried 110 grain bullets out of the 300 and how did they perform I would appreciat any input.

Is this the only rifle you own? If you load light weight bullets in your rifle, barrel life will be non-existent. Granted you can do what you want. I think Remingtonman has played with a variety of bullet weights, but at the cost of a barrel. If you really want to do this, try 125gn B-tips. Nosler is showing around 3800 to 3850 for velocities.

Anyway, just my opinion on the use of a 300 RUM.

Haven't tried any, but Barnes lists a 110 grain non-expanding bullet for fur taking. Oughta get the job done - and yes - that's a whole lot of rifle for a 'yote... Then again, I've taken 'em with a 7mm Rem mag so what the heck! Ah, I did get big holes in the hide though - just for info.

I would advise 150 FMJ and 94-97 gr of RL 22. Good for about 3600 fps and will fight the wind better.

I've shot coyotes with 300 RUM, but they were all with heavy weight 200g+ bullets. They will all leave big holes, the smaller the bullet, the bigger the holes going to be in this case. I"ve shot them with 200g AB, 200g SMK"s, 210g ULD RBBT, 210g VLD, 220g SMK. Bottom line was they all left 4-8" exits reguardless of shot placement. I shot teh 125g BT at 3950fps and it totally vaporized water jugs at 100 yards, but never did get to shoot a yote with them. My thinking is you would be picking up pieces of the coyote. I also played with 150g BT at 3650fps and pretty much same result. Way to explosive at these kinda velocities. Was a very accurate load though produing 1/2 MOA at 800 yards on a couple outings. Never did use them for anything though...Barrel life is already short on the 300 RUM. In my opinion, your handicapping the cartridges real and true abilty to perform with anything less then a 200g bullet.

SERIOUSLY???? Well, I got to give you credit for shooting the gun you hunt with. :) I suspect its a Remington so maybe you could think about picking up a used Remington in 223 or 22-250. No recoil comparitively speaking and practice w/ a similar rifle would hopefully help make me a better shot? Ammo is easy to find etc.

Dad used to take the 7 Mag "jack" hunting. 130 grain speers (all he ever shoots) would put a pencil hole through a jack but almost shoot a fox in two. More knowlegable folks than me will have to tell you if you could load your RUM down enough to shoot a lighter bullet. Good Luck!! CL

I have some 110gr V-max's loaded right now for the same scenario. It's been too darn cold here and I havn't had a chance to see how they'll shoot. Only difference being, I'm not worried about hole size. Just trying them because I had them......prefference if it's your only rifle I'd load the 125gr B-Tip on the extreme light side and use that.
Good Luck

PETER peter peter.........

I found some 130g XLC's, I'll bring them to you on monday with the 150 fmj's.......
