Varmint rifle

Off the rack? Custom? Rebarrel of an existing rifle?

Whatever you do, fast twist is your friend.

Looking to pop some of those Nevada sage rats? They're itty-bitty targets... Dad hits 'em hard with his Rem 700 in .22-250, but it's not CRF. Mighty accurate though.

I use a little CZ 527 varminter, in .204, but it's avail in the .22's. The .204 out-performs some of the .22's though - look hard at the ballistics before you make that choice. The CZ rifle is controlled round feed, with a cool little mini-mauser action. I don't think it's at all necessary on a varmint rifle, but if that's what you prefer, go for it.

What's "long range" mean for you? Are you going to be shooting up colonies of sage rats or ground squirrels or prairie dogs? Or just popping an occasional rock chuck?

A guy can do it all with one varmint rifle, but it's kind of nice to tailor the rifle to the task.

If more range is needed, I will admit to zapping ground squirrels with .30 cal cartridges, including magnums...

The .243 is another great one to consider, or the 6mm Remington. Both are excellent varmint cartridges, a little bigger than the various .22's.

I think Winchester is making their CRF model 70 in a couple of varmint rifle configurations now too... Here's a link:

Many good questions raised, in order to answer the full extent of needs/wants
However, if I was looking for such in a production gun,,,I believe I would consider a Kimber first off.
Otherwise, it would be an action that Jewel triggers are set up to replace.

The 22-250 chambered in a Model 70 would be a sweet rifle. It may get my attention at some point in the future.

Jake,
I'd like to give one of these a spin. 204 for rats 22-250 for bigger stuff. For an off the shelf gun I here they shoot well.

For a custom keep your eyes peeled for a Mod 70. If the budget is smaller there is nothing wrong with a Ruger. You could even start with one of their target models.

So... Is a Ruger Number One a "CRF" ? I guess that depends on if the shooter is a butterfingers or not!

At one point I had a Number One varminter in .25-06 that would put three, 100 gr Sierra SPBT Gamekings in tight little clusters measuring in the .2's - it was a wonderful rifle that I sold when cash was tight. That was years ago and I still miss it... Those Number One Varminters are made in .223 and .22-250 as well. Really classy rifle that will do a fine job in the varmint fields!

I was in a similar situtation with #1 in a .220 Swift... shot in the .2's as well. Wish I had it back!
But another rifle option well worth considering, and I haven't found a single shot action to be a handicap.

Yes it is... Excellent accuracy, great velocity, and with a fast twist barrel... Well, they're just superb.

Why CRF? Are you sure 22 is big enough :?

Kidding aside, if you want CRF, your only factory option will be either the Ruger, Kimber or Winchester. I have the old Kimber 82 when they're still manufactured in Oregon. It's chambered for the 223 Remington and loves the 55 grain Nosler BT and the 52-53 grain Sierra Matchking.

Montana Rifle Company - for about $100.00 over the listed price they would chamber this in 22-250.

Montana Rifle Company EWR Same as above, not their full blown customs and run about $1000.00.

Them darn rabbits. The AR works great for about 0-200 or so with that little 4X ACOG on it. But for those longer shots I want something in a bolt. Yes the 280 or AI work good but a rabbit you can whack with a 140 or 160 and they will run 15-20 yards and kill over unless you take a head off or go the length of them. Seems like they almost pencil through not enough energy transfer. I really like them frangible 55 gr V-max or BT when you hit them there done right there. Kinda been thinking 22-250 or AI. The light barreled 243 heats up to quick and the 6-284 is a lefty so after about 20 rounds your cheek is pretty sore. The toughest part about it is most shots your only seeing ears and got to pick the body out of vegetation or kinda use your imagination. So optics will be really important. I guess I could build myself another 6-284 for me. But that's kinda a long term goal and would take too much time. In the last 10 days I've shot over 200 jacks. And now badly behind on the bench. The hungry little fellers have taken 10X400 yard section of the alfalfa field out so its gonna be pretty important to keep up with them.

That's the one I wouldn't mind picking up if it was in 22-250 and available next payday.

I do not understand the CRF need but hey no biggie.

+ 1---but I would be interested in knowing why

204
220 swift
22-250
224 Wea. Mag

the 224 can be expensive to shoot however and you would want to make sure of the type of barrel the gun has otherwise you could be replacing it rather quickly

For this type of gun I also dont have a problem with it being a single shot.

David, if your around, be careful what you hope for LOL--I had a few minutes to myself today and therefore had time to make more than one post
