Favourite cartridges based off the H&H Case?

What us your favourite cartridge based off of the H&H cases (either 300 or 375)?

I have owned, and still own, a few over the years...
Based on the 300 H&H case:

• 270 Wby - my favourite Wby cartridge (and only one I have owned) - have owned 3 rifles in this cartridge over the years and have taken coyotes, mule deer, moose and my first elk
• 7mm Rem Mag - my favourite based off the 300 H&H case - now on my second rifle, and have taken mule deer, mtn goat, moose and elk over the years
• 300 Win Mag - my least favourite cartridge based off the 300 H&H case, after the 300 Wby (I prefer the WSM), but have owned one, and have taken a bison with it, and nyala, bushbuck, kudu, impala, and warthog with the PH's loaner rifle - a good cartridge, just not a favourite for me
• 338 Win Mag - an impressive performer and one I really like and have a great appreciation for - I have owned two rifles in this chambering over the years, and have taken black and grizzly bear, moose, elk and bison with it over the years
• 416 Taylor - a cartridge made by necking up the 338 Win Mag, or necking down the 458 Win Mag that doesn't require a magnum length action to function and duplicate the performance of the 416 Rem or Rigby - still need to take a big game animal with it...perhaps a bison or a brown bear

Based on the 375 H&H case:

• 7mm STW - my favourite cartridge based off the 375 H&H case - have just this one rifle for over 26 years now, and it has proven to be very effective on game from 5 to 475 yards, including pronghorn, whitetail and mule deer, mtn goat and sheep (bighorn and stones), caribou, moose and elk over the years
• 375 Wby - if I were to be tempted to step up from my 376 Steyr, I would most likely do so with the 375 Wby. I have shot a friend's 375 H&H AI (which duplicates the 375 Wby in performance) and liked how it shot, and didn't find the recoil objectionable with 270 gr bullets.

I had an 8mm Remington mag for a number of years. Had it rebarreled to a 338 Jarrett. It was a good elk round but when I left it suitable bullets were tough to find.
I’ve owned two 300 WM and one 7mm mag. Never really liked any of them.
Currently own one 375 HH and a 300 HH. Love them both. They are my go to for elk from now on. Both are #1’s

375 H&H, because Mr H & Mr H got this one right - and like the 30-06 it just keeps getting better with age, better bullets and better powders.


7mm Rem Mag which I enjoy shooting so much more than the 300's... It's just enough less oomph on my shoulder that it seems a lot easier for me to deal with. I haven't taken vast quantities of big game with it, but some, and it's always done a stellar job.


Those two are my favorites, but there are so many great belted magnums. The B&C record book is full of trophies taken with 338's, 300's, 7's and more... I do have a soft spot in my heart for Weatherby's favorite 257 Wby Magnum though I just haven't used it enough. Such light recoil for all that zap!

I pick the 375 H&H Mag. I love cycling those big shells through my Nosler M21, smooth as silk. A powerful round that is pretty easy to shoot and surprisingly accurate. I've shot mine out to 600 yards on gongs.

I'm less of a traditionalist I guess. I've used so many wildcats based on belted magnums its silly really. Probably my favorite (non Canadian spelling ) is the 30-8mn mag, but I did use the 7STW a bunch too. I hunted with them for years and still have 2, plus a 308 Baer (just a 35 degree shoulder version).

If I head back to Africa I'll use a 375JRS (375-8mm mag). I bought a bunch of Peterson long magnum blank brass so I can have tougher properly head stamped brass.

Those cases are basically the same case capacity as the 30 Nosler, just nearly .300 longer, but todays actions can handle the longer cases.

I've used a 7mm RM for almost as long as I've lived in Canada. It has accounted for moose, elk, mule deer, whitetail, and quite a variety of smaller "critters" (targets of opportunity). Yeah, it's favourite (Canadian spelling).

My 7mm Remington Magnum has been used to take deer, elk, and bear, so it has to rank as a favorite. That said, I also have a soft spot for the 300 Winchester Magnum. Back in 1965 I went into our local hardware store that sold Remington and Winchester rifles. My intent was to purchase a Winchester model 70 in 300 Win Mag.. The only model 70 magnum that they has in-stock was the 7mm. I bought it and it was my carry rifle for the next 39 years. I still loved it but wanted to start experimenting with different cartridges.

Clear winner is the 375 Wby , took a 300 WM Vanguard and turned into the 375 Wby myself. The pride of doing it and the rewarded how well it shoots.

308 Norma Magnum for me. Still the best designed belted 30 cal magnum in my opinion. Shot my first caribou and mountain goat with it. Took a bunch of moose and bear too.

270 Weatherby would be next, never shot one but always have been intrigued by it. A 160 gr Partition at 3100 fps would be an awesome load. This might edge out the 308 Norma one day.

264 Win Mag would be next. Shot my biggest mountain goat with it along with a bunch of deer and another good goat. Excellent cartridge for sure.

I'll go with 300 H&H for the win, in part because the rifle in which I have this cartridge is a real peach (Cooper Jackson Game with a Leupold VX6)

I have owned rifles in .257 Wby Mag, 7mm Rem Mag, .300 Win Mag, 8mm Rem Mag and .375 H&H Magnum that qualify for this discussion.

My favorite all-around cartridge based on the H&H case is the 7mm Rem Mag. Although I don’t currently own one, it to me is the belle of the ball for the kind of hunting that I do. A 160 grain Nosler AccuBond at around 2950 fps to me is all-around perfection in the 7mm Rem Mag.

Second place goes to the .264 Win Mag. But its so similar and yet not as versatile as the 7mm Rem Mag that one must simply have a soft spot for it. My father owns a push-feed M70 that belonged to my grandfather. It shoots great and works dandy on elk with the 140 grain AccuBond.

The .300 Win Mag is a darn good cartridge, I simply do NOT enjoy shooting .300 Magnums. The recoil and concussion isn’t worth the 100-200 fps advantage that it gets over the .30-06 in my opinion. Of course a muzzle brake helps tons, but my tinnitus is already awful. No thanks.

The .375 H&H Mag I had was also a nice push-feed M70 which I should’ve kept. Having kids will cause you to sacrifice dream guns when money runs short.
It was heavy recoil on the bench but offhand or from a standing rest it was plenty tolerable. If I can ever afford to go to Africa, I will buy another. Until then, I just don’t have much use for one.

without a doubt the STW, a 160 AccuBond at 3340 fps,, have taken whitetails to 606 yards using holdover. a 140 at 3550 will also get it done.

7mag and 375W for me. For what ever reason the 300 and 338s that I have owned or shot were not very pleasant. The exception to that was 338 made by Rifles Inc. Should have bought that one from him as it was like shooting a 270.
