Bullet Help

My brother sent this to me , it’s an 357 Magnum but what bullet is it. He picked up a break action and would like to get some of these. I looked around and can’t seem to find a SP bullet with a cannelure in .357.
Any ideas?

I wonder if it's a .358" rifle bullet intended for the 35 Remington or similar cartridge?

Maybe pull the bullet from that 357 case and weigh it? That might narrow things down.

I load many 180 fp Speers in a Whelen. That is what I’m seeing there.

My guess is the old Hornady 180 grain SSP (Single Shot Pistol) bullet. They made a run of them for pistols years back. I may even have a box on the shelf.

The Speer 180 has a pretty flat point on them, or at least mine do.

I'm sort of thinking that as well My best guesses would be the 150 gr. Rem. CL or possibly the Hornady 180 gr. for specialty pistols like thee T/C Contender. Pulling a bullet and weighing it would go a long way on deciding which. I have a coffee can that's better than half full of those Remington 150 gr. bullets. I can use them in my .358 Win. and .35 Whelen.

Cool, I wonder how those would do on deer. I believe they are still offered in 35 Rem ammo so they must do well.

remington use to load a150 gr. in the 35 remington when the single shot pistols first took off.

Some manufacturers put cannelures on their bullets for component sales, but not for manufacturing ammunition, and vice versa, so it can be hard to determine for certain just by the cannelure on a bullet.

That’s what it was. Fast forward to today I finally got some loaded up. It took some doing to track some down. These will be shot out of a H&R break action rifle.

Good that you got it figured out. I'm interested in how they perform for you. Worked with a guy years ago that used this bullet (factory load) in his Remington Mod 760 35 Rem. Said they did well.

It is actually my brother’s rifle. I was surprised on the velocity that combo can produce. 18grs put it at 2000 fps.

Remington 150 grain meant and loaded for the 35 Remington. I do not know if they still load them as factory ammo. I do not forsee any significant expansion with those velocities from a pistol.

If you are getting 2000 fps those should do well for deer. I used the 150 gr in factory .35 Remington in a TC Contender and they worked great on antelope and whitetail deer. I moved up to the 180 SSP from Hornady when I started loading for it.
