I got a call yesterday afternoon from the owner of Douglas barrels. He had seen my lament posted on my inferior Douglas barrel while the rest of you were quite happy with yours. He bought the company 3 years ago and has been working aggressively updating their process and equipment with ultimate goal of being a top producer in the barrel making industry.
The list of things they are doing to improve quality is impressive.
Perhaps the most important thing they are doing is tightening the specs on their barrel steel, improving the metallurgy and sourcing it locally to insure quality. When I described what I found in my barrel with the borescope he knew exactly what had happened. Essentially the hardness of the barrel changed mid length which causes the button to vibrate, (not exactly the word he used) causing the grooves running across the rifling. He described it as a random occurrence once out of a whole lot of barrels. He explained a random occurrence in the steel and a random selection, one out of three barrels and mine got missed.
He want on at length describing how they will continue to improve their barrels, as noted steel specs but also how they are rifling the barrels.
Long story short, Douglas is going to take care of me. I’ll have more to report at a later date.
