Sure is pretty up there in your part of the world, Guy. One of these days I need to commit to coming out there to see that part of the country.
@BK - It's not as mountainous or snowy, Kurt, but if you're looking for surveying work, I can put out feelers around the southeast. I know a few...
I've seen a few interesting things. Got up close with a bobcat, had a grey squirrel get within 2' of me before he realized I was there, had a fox squirrel declare i was on his tree with my climber, about 2hrs into my hunt. I've seen various snakes both venomous and non-venomous - some close...
I use E-Tips in two rifles - a 270Wby and 300Wby. In both, going to the slow side of powders has given the best results. If you have any, it might be worth shifting to IMR7828 if you have data for the 130gr weight. That'll be a bit slower even than the 4831s and perhaps offer you the best...
My experience with E-Tips is that they prefer slower powders. Not anything crazy and out of normal ranges for a given cartridge, but pick from the slowest appropriate powders for the cartridge and bullet weight.
For the added pound of weight and $70 cost, you may be just as wise to investigate other options. Unless your tnf bag is very light, you will end up with something like 6-8lbs in your pack. That's not light. If you're just truck camping it won't matter but packing in, it might be worth the cost...
You definitely want to visit the property and at least scout it before cutting a check. If they have a bunkhouse (old trailer, old cabin, closed in part of the barn, or whatever) and other facilities (bathroom, pole barn, camping area, cleaning shed, etc.) you'll want to be familiar with what...
I checked the most recent data and it's a little lower than the 6-8yr old stuff I have here. Still, impressive velocities for a 270Win. I like MagPro, and intend to burn a bunch of it in my son's 270WSM when he graduates up from the reduced loads we're going to start him on.
I surely understand the limits of my BMC. But considering all loads were shot over the same BMC, in roughly the same conditions, the error should be universal enough to maintain comparability, right? I'm geeking statistics now. Sometimes I think I should have been a math major.
If you want to get teased some more, take a look at the MagPro data for the 270Win. In a 24" test barrel, velocities were 3200 for the 130, and 3000 for the 150. I can get a copy of the data if you need it. I think MagPro data availability has trimmed down some from Accurate (Western) these...
Am I missing something, Doc? I'm getting an SD in single digit for the 68.5gr load (9.5), where I get not quite double that for the 67 and 67.5gr loads (15.6 and 17.3 respectively). Maybe I'm doing my math wrong (wouldn't be the first time) but I checked it in Excel after running it through my...
I'll add my corroboration to your idea to go to a shorter COL. I like your "Berger Method" idea, as I believe you'll find the best COL somewhere in the shorter end of that spectrum. Two together and one out is almost always helped by shortening.
What are your velocities for the 68.5gr load?
I'm not sure what the numbers will be like, but it seems in the recent past, Montana has had leftover Elk tags every year, which they then provide on a first-come, first-served basis. Not cheap, at almost a grand, and I'm not sure what sort of options you'd have on particular units, but the...
As much grief as I give about this, Scotty, remember that I bought my son a 270WSM and I suspect I'll one day own the Winchester variant just because. Certainly any of them could easily do the job on mynloacl white-tails and then some.
