Back in late 80,s a friend of mine wanted 200 grain bullets for elk hunting. He asked me to cook something up for his remmy 760 pump gun. I ended up Using IMR-4831, cci200 primers for a nice 2600 fps. The load was accurate in his rifle and seemed rather mild too. I stopped at 56 grains. That...
If all else fails try a different powder before you give up. Sometimes that pays off. My .270 with the 150LRAB shot crappy with H4831 and shot great with IMR-4831. No other changes. Just a powder change did it.
There was a nice jump in velocity from 57.5 to 58. 45 fps gain looks pretty good to me. A little more jet fuel just might get close to 3000. It will be interesting to see what happens for sure.
Excellent article. I think Ross made a pretty excellent point regarding bullets we have today versus the past. Its definitely nice to grab an 06 or .270 with a great bullet and go kill what you want without the recoil of the magnums. I can shoot my 300Magnum just fine but anything bigger or...
How about this one from Wayne Van Swoll. THE ONE YOU SHOOT THE BEST, provided you use a bullet designed for the intended game. Hard to argue with that one.
My 30:06 flat out loves RL-22 with the 180 PT. I can count on sub moa. For that matter my 300 mag with the same bullet does very well too. In western Wa. I don,t worry about the temp sensitivity issue as our temp swings are really not an issue. I have not loaded more than 61 grains with RL-22...
A couple summers back I chrony checked three 130 PT,s loaded with 57 grains of IMR-4831. The chrony read 3008,3009 and 3010. Yea that's good enough for normal hunting in my opinion. That load is always under moa too. (y)
Same with me. Been using my 5-0-5 since 1982. Darn thing just plain works. I do use a 55 grain weight standard to cross check the accuracy. Very good product in my view as well.
I have used IMR-4831 for a good while now. I loaded 130 grain sierra bullets and nosler PT,s starting in 1982 as I recall. Yes it can be an outstanding powder in a .270. To this day it remains my go to powder. I have been a long time user of nosler manual no.1 for powder charges. Never had an...
I have tried using plenty of jump with PT,s. Accuracy always suffered. I no longer bother to even experiment with it. With Pt,s I just load em .010 to .025 and always seem to be very happy with them. With AB,s I usually end up with a lot more jump.
