Got a Springfield Armory Ronin 9mm yesterday with the bag,Viridian green dot and 3 extra magazines package. Took to the range while ago and sighted in at 10yds resting the butt on a bag. First 2 shots were at the bottom of the target. Big twist up hitting dead on. Then went to 12-15 yds shooting off hand. Not great but not horrible considering who was shooting. Rested at 25yds banged plates, swinging tree. Put 152 rounds thru it loading every magazine 4 times each. No hiccups. Pleasant to shoot. Exactly what I was hoping for. The load was a 124gr X-treme bullet, 7.4grs AA#7 ,CCI500 primer, col 1.0945 , 1255fps average of 9 rounds. The green dot is easily seen. I like it better than I thought I would. Looking forward to spending time with this new range toy.

Excellent shooting. Sure is fun having new toys to play with at the range. I remember that brand name, Ronin. Guy had posted that he has one of those but in the .45 with the optics if not mistaken.

Very cool!

I put a Holosun 509 on my 45 ACP Springfield Ronin. A green-dot version. It's working out really well.

Was told that the green dots work out better for old eyes than the red dots. Don't know that it's true or not.

BTW, looks like you've got a mighty fine 9mm load there!

Regards, Guy

Any opinions on using an optic on an edc handgun. This talk has me interested in a ronin aos lightweight. What holster, are they more difficult to conceal, and so on.

All the younger guys on my church security team had some sort of 9mm semi-auto, mostly double stack, with an optic, and a rigid inside the waistband holster positioned in the "appendix" area.

Unconventional to me. But they were fast and accurate. Some were almost as accurate as an older guy I know well who used a 45 1911 and iron sights... ;)

It's a big change for us Bruce - I've set up my 45 1911 with the optic for an every day carry gun if I choose to carry that big of a gun. I could of course set up a much more compact pistol for the same job and it would be easier to conceal. I'm thinking along those lines already.

The dot optic is a blessing to those of us with old eyes - the iron sights may be blurry but that red or green dot is bold. Focus on the target, not the sight. Focus on the target, put the sight in the center, and press that trigger...

Do not get discouraged if the first few times with the optic are difficult. It's common to have trouble acquiring the dot. Dry fire and live fire will have you bringing the handgun up and seeing the dot quickly. Some optics are better than others. Take a look through them at a gun store. Try a few different ones if you can.

There are smaller ones that conceal better but they may not offer the big view that larger ones feature. It's a learning curve for sure. I highly recommend trying before you buy - but - stats are showing that by far and away the officers who use optics on their duty weapons are scoring far more hits, quickly, and making far fewer misses. I'm sold.

I won't be converting my entire fleet of handguns to optical sights, but I've got one hunting revolver set up with a red dot, and one carry 1911 set up with the green dot. They both work GREAT.

Regards, Guy

Added - I'm probably going to sell off a couple of firearms to fund optics for a couple more of my handguns...

The 6" S&W 686 357 magnum is ridiculously accurate even though I can't really see the sights. I suspect that it will be much better when I've got an optic of some sort on it.

This was only 7 yards - where my eyes don't seem to be a big problem even though I can't focus on the sights:

These were being dumped on the market at $650 by Palmetto State not long ago. Ya, they've got the "Hillary Hole" safety and a pretty ugly grip, but goodness it shoots well. The action was glitchy at first, it's smoothing out. I'll put a safety-delete kit in it and put an optic on it. I think this thing is going to be terrific with those changes. BTW, the grip is goofy looking, but it works great! Very comfortable and secure in use. I don't think I'll be changing it.

Yeah, I've carried at 3 both in and out of waistband forever. I can't see changing carry position especially to apex.

Guy,
You are not alone with the old eye syndrome.
My EDC is a Springfield Armory Hellcat Pro 9mm with a Crimson Trace red dot. Easy to carry and conceal. And the red dot is fast, I mean really fast!
