I have a planned hunt this Sunday for a bull scimitar oryx. Tested the 300 Win Mag this morning at 200 yards, seems spot on with the 180 TTSX Barnes. Getting all my gear together including the rangefinder and the dial ups are taped inside the scope flip cap cover for a quick look. Three ice chests are cleaned out and waiting in the porch. I'm going to rest tonight and prepare to leave early Sunday morning for a 2 hour drive. I was studying the anatomy of the scimitar oryx, its heart and lungs are more forward between the shoulders and sits low in the lower third of the chest cavity. My shot placement will be right on the lower 1/3 on the front leg bone. The powerhouse Barnes TTSX moving at 3240 fps will smash through the bone and into the opposite leg, hopefully stop under the hide on the opposite side. My bet will be that it will completely go through both shoulders. I will stay away from the crease behind the shoulder.
I never hunted an oryx before, nor have eaten them. I have been harvesting nilgai for quite a while, I decided to try something different. The guide says the bulls are close to 400 lbs on the hoof. We will be processing it at home, we sure will be busy for a couple of days.
In a couple of weeks, I will be harvesting two axis does. For those does, I'll be using the 6.5 x 284 using the 143 ELD-X.
