    Powder Choice for Competition?

I think Asa Yam says it about as well as it can be said although it doesn't mean we won't continue to keep trying for that elusive.000" We've come agonizingly close on several questions, but we're not quite there yet. Best wishes. Cal - Montreal

    Which varmint rifle?

Actually of my 6 varmint rifles, only 4 are factory jobs, A Sako Varminter (.222Rem.), a Remington VLS (6mm Rem.), a Remington 700BDL (.17Rem.) and a Rem. 40XBBR (.222Rem.) My .22-250Rem. and .222Rem. Mag. both have heavy Hart barrels. I guess I'm a bit of a fanatic about my varmint rifles...

    Sight-in rests

I've been using the same thing for almost 20 years, and it serves me well. It's a Hart rest (heavy rascal) and Protecktor bags. The rear bag has a double bottom so there's no wobble to it. A few years ago I changed the top to the Sinclair side adjustable model so I can apply a bit of side...

    26" barrel important?

I like a 26" barrel in my varmint rifles for long range woodchuck shooting, but wouldn't want a barrel that long for big game as it will probably just get in the way. Just one mans opiion. Best wishes. Cal - Montreal

    Need a .243 Win

I have a Savage 110 in .243Win. and it's always been a very accurate rifle for a sporter. Sako is an excellent rifle, but it's going to cost you a few coins. What do you think about Remington? The new model CDL should be quite accurate. Take your time and ask around some more until you feel...

    Case cleaning

I tumble my cases after every firing. Im not a cleaning freak, but I can do a better job of examining my cases for cracks and splits if they're clean. I also use a walnut media impregnated with jewellers rouge so it's actually a dry cleaning operating. The media seems to last a lot longer by...

    .243Win with 100gr Partition?

My older Savage 110 with a 1 in 10" twist doesn't do all that well with most 100gr. bullets. Yet, it shoots the Hornady 95gr. SST very nicely, around .7" (5 at 100yds.). I keep thinking it's due to bullet length, and not the weight, but I'm not certain yet. Best wishes. Cal - Montreal

    Reload to sarve money?

If you want to reload to pursue a new hobby, or to improve your accuracy that's great. It's a wonderful hobby. However if you're going to reload to save money, forget it. It's not going to happen. As your interest increases your gun purchases will probably do the same. When I started...

    25-06 and 85 g BT's

I get very good groups with Rel-19 56.0grs., around .75" (5 at 100yds.). This give me 3540fps., but if I slow it up to around 3450fps. the groups open up quite a bit to around 1.1". I suspect that if I increase my load to 3600fps. it'll do even better. Just one mans opinion. Best wishes...

Construction of 7mm 120 grain BT

I use the 120gr. Bal. Tip in my 7mm Rem. Mag. and am quite impressed with its accuracy. It'll reliably turn in groups of .69" (5 at 100yds.) at 3150fps. That's certainly accurate for anything I'm apt to hunt with it. Best wishes. Cal - Montreal

    IMR 4831 & 160 gr. Partitions

I have an older Remington 700BDL (fleur de lys checkering) from the early '80s that's very accurate. It'll reliably give me .6" (5 at 100yds) with Speer 160gr. PSP and IMR4831. For whatever reason that powder works wonders with this caliber. Best wishes. Cal - Montreal

    howa 243 ballistic tips

I get excellent results with the Nosler 70gr. Bal.Tip in both my .243Win. and my 6mm Rem. as well. I find the Sierra 70gr. HPBT is equally as accurate in these rifles. Neither caliber is very finicky and a wide range of powders give good results. Best wishes. Cal - Montreal

    What's your best reloading tip?

This is just a recommendation from a guy who has split several cases by using the data from old, out of date manuals. When I buy a new manual, usually Nosler or Sierra, I put the older one away from easy reach. I may check it occasionally for referrence, but that's all. Powder is the...

    .308 brass test?

I'm a big believer in Lapua brass, including .308Win. I only wish they would expand their caliber offerings. It's expensive though still not up there with Norma. I find Lapua brass very uniform in weight and dimensions. I also really like the affiliated VihtaVouri powders and often get my...

What Calibers Are You Loading For?

I had no idea so many guys owned so many and such a variety of firearms. My question is this: Is it really safe to post this iformation on a website? I for one don't have that much faith in my fellow man. I'd be interested in other opiions on this. Best wishes. Cal - Montreal

My only Remington 700BDL that's been a bummer.

Hello guy, I agree with you. Todays factory ammo seems much better than that of 20 years ago or so. My handloads are still more accurate and print smaller groups, but the difference is nowhere near as far apart as it used to be. Best wishes. Cal - Montreal

    Milsurp Rifles Still Popular

I agree with you and feel the same way about the Swedish M96 in 6.5x55. I have 3 of them, but could never bring myself to sporterize them. I've refinished the wood and metal on mine, and they look terrific once restored. In time as they become harder to come by I think their value will be up...

    Ruger rifles?

I think many of the Ruger accuracy problems were due to their not making their own barrels, but I understand that's changed recently and they are now producing their own. For a long time it was a crap shoot. Some were very good, some were awful. Best wishes. Cal - Montreal

    Howa 243Win. Comments.

That's encouraging to hear of the Howas accuracy. I was beginning to wonder about them. I know they make them with varmint weight barrels and the stocks on those rifles look like they'd be good for a heavy varmint rifle, but I rarely see anything about their accuracy in the gun magazines...
