Wait until you try 400 and 500 yds...that's a long way! Where we hunt, it's common to have 300-400 yard shots frequently. If you can hit at 500, 300 isn't an issue.
onlybrowing - we went with Ungava Adventures. They did a great job. I have also heard nothing but good about Jack Hume as well.
jdmason480 - I don't know much about the western Canadian hunting, other than they are the barren ground subspecies and you can only shoot one animal (second tag...
tjen - I use IMR 4350 in mine (WSM) and it works great.
JD338 - we did catch some nice lake trout, but it was catch and release only by the time we went. You could keep them the first couple of days we were there, but we were hunting then
Yeah, we had a really good time. I would do...
Just got back from our caribou hunt in Quebec. My dad, brother, and myself all filled our tags. Hunting was tough, the caribou weren't moving much, we'd see maybe 15 to 20 a day. Dad ended up shooting a couple of small ones, and my brother got a decent one and a small one. I also was...
After 1 1/2 years of planning, preparing, and waiting, my dad, brother, and myself are headed to Quebec to hunt caribou. Weather is supposed to cloudy and rainy when we get there, but will be followed up with some nice days early on. Days have been in the low to mid 50's and nights in the...
Thanks all for the responses. I personally have never experienced any problems with IMR 4350, which is why it was a "shocker" for me when I heard this. The elk I shot in Utah last year was in mid December at around 25 deg F that morning with fresh snow on the ground. The round performed just...
I was talking to a guy who works at a local sporting goods store in the reloading section. He mentioned that IMR 4350 doesn't perform as good in really cold weather (a semi-auto gun he has in particular). Has anyone heard of this or expereined it? I haven't, at least to my knowlegde.
thanks

Just finished up a NM oyrx hunt with my brother today at 10:30 a.m. This was the first one to present us with shot, and although it is a younger one, we were glad to take it. It also didn't help that he was trying to get over a nasty touch of the flu...he shot it at 235 yds with a .270 WSM and...
my wife shoots my .270 wsm when she hunts. I put a SVL recoil pad on it and it makes a huge difference in what you feel for recoil. I am reloading a medium wt of powder for a 140 gr AB and it works great!
Just finished up a Utah cow hunt last week (1 week ago). It was a new area to me, never hunted it before. The storms that hit the southern rockies put down around 8-12 inches where I was hunting. Cut some tracks made the afternoon before, quit snowing by then, and kept on them until I caught...
I agree with you about the Accubond! Like you, I had the opportunity to take a cow in December, but in Utah. Mine was a younger cow shot at 293 yards - with my .270 WSM, 140 gr AB...the bullet passed through her. I tried for a high shoulder shot but was about 3 inches lower than where I...
I agree! But guess what, there are other organizations other than Cabela's doing this...it's happened in my homestate of NM. A ranch was donated to a certain organization, and this organization only allows hunters to hunt on this land if you have a spare $10,000.00 dollar bill in your pocket...
Head or neck, preferably just below the ear. If not, a high shoulder shot plumb with their front leg about 2/3 up from the brisket (1/3 below their back). Puts them down in their tracks.
Greg-
Where are you coming from? Will you be driving or flying? There are meat processors in both Las Cruces and Socorro, as well as Abq. If you draw, drop me a PM. We won't know until early March 2008.
