Long range shooting

Well I got a good lesson on shooting at long range, at least to 300 yards. I used think I was a pretty good shot and usually shoot really good groups at 100 yards half inch to one inch with my Savage 3006.

Tried shooting at 300yards for the first time and wow, what an eye opener. First group was huge and the second group was about 4 inches and lower than I thought it should be until I looked at the ballistics chart in my Nosler book.

I have lots more practice to do now. These are my handloads as well.

Wait until you try 400 and 500 yds...that's a long way! Where we hunt, it's common to have 300-400 yard shots frequently. If you can hit at 500, 300 isn't an issue.

Most years I'll do what I call Ladder out.
I'll start at 100 yards, and shoot until I get good groups, and move out 100 yards at a time working for good groups at each range until I run out of range.....

At 300 and beyond is where you will notice the trigger job, bedding and a low S.D.
I sight most of my rifles to be inside a 6" vertical kill zone out to 300.
I may be 1.5" high at 100 3"high at 200 and 3" low at 300 (not an actual trajectory) but I won't have to think about hold overs until I get past 300 yds.

Talking LRH is ok, but.............

If ANYONE mentions Sierra Matchkings for LRH I will quit, join a monastery and become a monk!

Shooting at longer ranges is very good idea to see what your bullets are really doing. I too found out that 100 yards don't tell ya much about your loads potential at longer ranges. I had a load that would shoot a 3 shot clover leaf at 100 but looked more like a shotgun pattern at 200. Switched bullets and the problem went away.

The .338 300 gr SMK is "the" bullet for long range hunting.
Just ask the LRH guys.

Ya take a look over there at the performance of the 300SMK that was used on a speedgoat. Not my idea of a hunting bullet that's for sure.

160gr NAB

WC860 is a surpluss powder, which have greater variation lot to lot. Greater caution should be used when working up surpluss powder loads.
