    finally took the plunge

str8meat, That scope is rather large for a 338. I have one on the Swift. After owning many scopes for over half a century from Lymans, Hensoldt, and then ten Leupolds I have now stopped buying Leu. and the last seven have been Zeiss. The Zeiss Conquest is a better scope than the Leupold VX3...

    Kimber or Sako

That rifle that blew up is a Sako and Tikka's blew up too. The cause is defective steel and not the wrong cartridge. You are wrong on that.

    Belted Magnum Brass

Could it be that the FL dies for those Weatherby's was not made or set right?

    Belted Magnum Brass

So far in 54 years of handloading I have never needed such a product. Learn to set your FL die right so as not to over size the brass headspace wise.

    140gr bullet for a 7STW

Here is the spec. on the 168 gr Berger VLD. " 7mm 168 gr Match VLD 0.284 168 0.643 10 twist" Thus it has a BC of .643 and requires a minimum 1-10" twist which most all 7mm's have.

    140gr bullet for a 7STW

Welcome to the forum ElkHunter. For that large of a cartridge I would use a longer bullet with a better BC. Its the wind drift that gets us. At least it does if we have a LRF and data. Another thing is that I don't think the 140 BT will penetrate as far as I want it to at high velocities in...

    358 win conversion/Big Game rifle

Mickey, No the 225 Nosler will not fit in a 2.8" magazine but that should not bother you as you never read my previous post either.

Why I Lean Toward Weatherby Rifles

Bullet, Your choice of the Weatherby MK5 is fine with me. For my own reasons it would be about the last choice. I did own one made by Sauer in .378 for a while. As to how the lugs are cut does not matter much to me. The fact that they seem to work ok but no better than other actions is...

    Kimber or Sako

Neither the Kimber or Sako rifles are without fault. The Sako recently suffered blowups that blew the fingers off of some shooters. As for Kimber they have had some less dangerous problems with accuracy being the most common from what I have read and experienced. I have purchased 5 new...

    VLD Bullets for Hunting

I have switched some of my rifles over to Berger's VLD bullets for deer hunting. So far I have shot two deer with VLD's and the results were excellent. Below is a doe hit at 315 yds with a 168 VLD from my 7mm WSM. This is a very accurate bullet.

    Which Cartridge???

If the ranges are longer I like the Kimber in 7mm WSM and for a lightweight the Kimber in the 84M model. I have dozens of hunting scopes. First were the now old Lymans, then ten Leupolds. The last 7 have been Zeiss. The scope of the decade is the Zeiss Conquest 3-9 for a magnum and a...

    Mountain rifle ideas

I prefer the 7mm over the .277". The 7's have a faster twist and shoot longer bullets with superior BC's. There really is no valid reason, in theory, for a .277" bore. True I went and bought a .270 WSM as I thought the 7mm WSM would die and indeed it might be dead. Now that Berger has come...

Very nice stock. Has the cartridge been standardized by SAAMI yet? Can we buy factory 280AI ammo?

    P1917 in .300 H&H

A P-17 Winchester in 30-06 was my first real deer rifle. My dad got it for me from some guy in the rifle club. It had a sporterized military stock, cock on opening and was drilled and tapped along with a home made single stage trigger. We reblued it and stocked it with the Bishop stock of the...

    P1917 in .300 H&H

It seems that you did not pay very much? If thats the case it indeed is the guns main point. I would have scope bases installed as your doing but then just see how it shoots. If it shoots well then consider just using it as it is. Two stage triggers are not that bad at all once you practice...

Matching the bullet with the cartridge

bullet, I don't agree with most of the replies thus far. While its true that a dead animal on the ground seems like an easy feat there is a great falacy in this thinking. Its that the ones that are not on the ground have run off wounded. Many things can happen when you press off a shot at...

    358 win conversion/Big Game rifle

Mickey, Its good to see interest in my favorite woods cartridge the old .358 Winchester. The replies before me are quite informed and I am impressed by them. I got my first .358 in a M99F in 1966 and it's still my favorite rifle for game in the woods. I use the lighter bullets for deer such...

VX-7 from LEUPOLD.. WHO HAS SEEN ONE

My comments were relevant to the run of the mill scopes such as the current Leupold VX2's and VX3's and their older models as compared to the Zeiss Conquest line. The Leupold VX-7 2.5-10 X 45 mm is an upscale scope by Leupold that has a 30mm body, much more weight, features and cost than usual...

    Improved Cartridge Question

The improved round uses a little more powder so that you can use a little more bullet if you so choose. Thats all there is to it.
