You may want to take a look at RL17 in your 6.5. It is getting 150 + fps over 4831 and 4350 with that cartridge. See the link below. You could get 2900 with much lower pressures or you could run at the same pressure and get around 3100 fps.

You may also want to try a faster burning powder like IMR3031 or 4895 to reduce recoil. You can get powder charges down to around 44-47 Grains with the the 165s. That powder charge is about typical of the 308 and would recoil the same as a typical 308 round does.
The 338 UM is a great choice for a long range to extreme long range caliber but is overkill for north american game IMHO.
I have never hunted grizzley and never intend to. I have seen films of dozens of grizzley killed with the tired old anemic 338 win mag, that were dropped nearly immediately...
140 Grain BT. Nearly the same trajectory as the 120 due to its higher BC. It is plenty tough enough at 7mm-08 velocities and a lot cheaper than the accubond.
62 FPS is actually a pretty worthwhile improvement when you consider the difference between min charge and max for many powders is around 180 fps. When you calculate the typical gains in FPS vs PSI in the reloading manuals you will find that it normally requires around a 50+ PSI increase to get...
I have never loaded any of the e-tips yet. I anticipated higher pressures with a given charge but did not anticipate reduced velocity. I am hoping to push the 168 E tip at the same velocity as the 168 grain ballistic tip.
I had sent an email shortly after Nosler released the E-Tip pleading for a 168 grain offering in 30 cal. I just found out they released one and it has a .503 BC. I cannot wait to try them out in my 06. I just ran the ballistics and it is outstanding. My point blank range is around 300 yards...
I would give Bore Tech Eliminator a try. It is not ammonia based and does not immediatly evaporate. I used to use Sweets and Butches Bore Shine but switched to Bore Tech Eliminator. I had what I thought was a clean barrel after using Sweets, and I ran a patch of Eliminator and it came out...
The 168 grain BT load is 59 Grains RL17, remington brass, 200 CCI primers and an OAL of 3.410". The bullets are 10 thousands from the lands. I neck size the brass using Lee collet dies and my empy case volume is 68.5 grains. I am on my 9th loading with this and the primer pockets are still tight.
You are comparing an optimum big game bullet weight in the 270 to a poor at best big game bullet in the 06. As a general rule it is best to compare similar sectional density when evaluating different cartridges. That being said the 150 grain Etip in 30 caliber would be the best combination of...
That is generally true but with RL 17 you can match or exceed the light mag velocities. I chronyd the 165 grain interbond light mags at 2950 fps and have been hand loading the 168 Nosler Ballistic Tips at 3012 fps using RL17. This is from a 22" barrel.
Just a side note according to Quickload...
I have used tubb final finish and it worked very well for me. The barrel fouls a lot less and my groups shrunk. I only used 1/2 the bullets because I was paranoid it would mess up the barrel but it just smoothed it out just as advertised.
You need to start out with a perfectly clean barrel...
I am not a big fan of the light bullets. The downrange trajectories on the light bullets are actually no flatter than the midweight bullets because the BC on the light bullets are so low. I ran the ballistics a while back and the 168 grain Nosler BT is as flat as anything I can load in my 06...
I load 54 grains of RL 17 with a 3.410 OAL, and CCI 200 primers. According to quickload it is right at 65,000 psi. So this should only be loaded in modern rifles also chambered in 270 winchester.
My rifle is a Savage 116 with a 22" barrel.
Groups are 5/8 to 7/8", my best group is 3/8" it was very calm and that day I was 5/8" or less with 4 of 5 groups. I am not the best shot either. I have neck sized 7 times before needing to FL size the brass. I have not had sticky bolt lift except after 6 - 7 reloads that were only neck sized...
I have been pushing the 168 grain Nosler Ballistic Tip at 3012 using RL17. I would think you could get the same from the 165 grain accubond. According to quickload I am right at 65,000 psi with 59 grains RL17 and 3.410 OAL so this load is for modern bolt action rifles also chambered in 270 Win.
I am in the same boat with my 06. It does many things well and when you compare to other cartridges out there the differences are mainly academic. Since I have started reloading with RL17 it has improve my velocities by over 100 FPS in several weight bullets.
For a flat shooting round I...
Bore Tech Eliminator gets both carbon out and copper out. I have tried Shooter choice, Hoppies 9, Butches Boreshine, and Sweets and Eliminator worked for me the best by wide margin.
When chambering a round to check for OAL I always use a sharpie on the sides of the bullet and I trim the case and do not debur. Then I chamber the round carefully and the case will scrape away the marker as the bullet slides back. Sometimes the lands will grab the bullet when you start to...
