hornady powders

does anybody know what powder is in the hornady light mags for the 30/06??? or maybe a powder with the same burn rate,, i dont have a chrony so i cant comepare velositys,,,

I heard or read somewhere that they were using the Vhitavouri "Hi Energy" powders (N5xx series, I think) to achieve the higher velocities at comparable pressures but that was long ago and I do not recall who the source was...so, I can't say it was a credible source. Could be pure baloney, maybe not.

From what I`ve seen and heard they use a ball powder that is very dense.

There is a new thread on the 24hourcampfire.com about them dropping the Lite Mag line and going to a new one. These will have a new extruded powder that will be loaded without as much compacting and the inter lock bullet will be dropped and a all copper one introduced along with the SST.
The new ammo is now showing on their web (Hornadies) site.

i did pull a bullet from one round and the powder was 52.5gr and was a ball powder,, theres no date on the box but i do know its an older make,, they do shoot pretty well in my 30/06,, i was just currious to see if a current powder was comparable,,

That is generally true but with RL 17 you can match or exceed the light mag velocities. I chronyd the 165 grain interbond light mags at 2950 fps and have been hand loading the 168 Nosler Ballistic Tips at 3012 fps using RL17. This is from a 22" barrel.

Just a side note according to Quickload the RL17 pressures are 65kpsi so this is a load that is only for firearms also loaded in 270 Winchester.

The 168 grain BT load is 59 Grains RL17, remington brass, 200 CCI primers and an OAL of 3.410". The bullets are 10 thousands from the lands. I neck size the brass using Lee collet dies and my empy case volume is 68.5 grains. I am on my 9th loading with this and the primer pockets are still tight.

hornady has a whole new line of "superformance" ammo out. They claim 100-200 fps increase in velocity with every load in the line. Its all about the powder I'll bet. Sorry Nosler. CL

62 FPS is actually a pretty worthwhile improvement when you consider the difference between min charge and max for many powders is around 180 fps. When you calculate the typical gains in FPS vs PSI in the reloading manuals you will find that it normally requires around a 50+ PSI increase to get a 1 FPS velocity increase. That would probably put my pressure numbers around 2,000 psi higher than the Hornady magic powders at the same velocity.
