Congrats on a fine young bull. I will say it will be very tasty indeed. I told my kids when I came back with a spike buck and a doe when they asked "where are the antlers dad" I said that you will wreck all your teeth trying to eat the antlers, meat is easier to chew. I to love my 30-06 and...
I was just wondering if anyone knows how one would go about finding out what powder and how much powder for a factory load? Do the manufacturers supply someone with that info if requested? I can't find any info on the box, and I am curious only because I was inpressed with the groups from some...
That is very interesting. If this is true then anytime you take say 10 rounds out with you on a hunt and come back could then end up having a corrosion problem after that? If this is true it will definately make my mind up with just staying with the Partitions and no even trying the AB's.
Wow, what a predicament to be in. I only have 2 choices. For your choice I think I would go 280 Rem with 160gr. I never have really caught on to the speed/velocity thing, but I think the 160gr will hit em hard and stop a deer in its tracks. Good luck
It is not the biggest buck I have ever shot, but it sure will be tender. I guess that I found the sweet spot with my Mod 70 30-06 and OAL 3.330" with the good old NP 180gr. Unfortunately what you are seeing is the entrance slightly behind and went through taking lung. It was a rested 383yd...
wildgene, that is a very fine looking buck indeed. I was sucessful this weekend with a spike whitetail buck Saturday night and whitetail doe this morning. As soon as I download the camera I will post some pictures. Speaking of pictures does anyone know how to get the photos to post smaller so...
Thanks, it has always shot like that right out of the box. The BLR used to shoot like that when I was loading IMR4350 powder for it and then was advised it was way too slow for a .308 rifle. I am still trying to chase that accuracy down with the Varget load. I am considering loading up some...
I am thinking about using either 2.760" or just slightly below at 2.750". I am also looking at the data that jimbires supplied to me and do not want to go too short due to increase pressures. I would rather error on caution side that trying to make a hunting rifle into a sub 1/2 MOA rifle...
Well I was back at the range Sunday morning. It looks like my 30-06 has decided it really really likes an OAL or 3.330". That group was with a bipod and a rear sandbag, and yes there was 5 rounds through there. I have a witness who was just as shocked.
These are another set of 3 rounds...
A friend of mine told me that when the holes line up vertically and one like the 2.720" target this is where the ideal OAL is. His reason behind this is the dropped hole is a velocity drop not a pulled shot. The 2.740" target shows the pulled round as the patern is started by the two rounds...
Very sweet looking rifles. As you know I am a fan of the 30-06 and .308, so I know you will have a great time with that rifle in the field. I am still kicking myself for selling my old Redfield scope with a rifle years ago. That scope was great. Good luck.
Exactly right Guy. I, well I should say my 30-06 likes the 180 NP and 55.0gr H4350 for an average of 2738 fps. Once I found the best OAL to tighten the group to sub 1" I do not think there is an animal where I am that is going to care that I could push another 100 fps or so out of it. As long...
As I said 30-06 is a no brainer. The one problem I have with the .308 and the 2.800" is this length does not feed well as it is near the max length of the magazine. I was looking at the 2.740" and 2.720" and wonder if the out lyers are pulled. Both of these lengths fed really smoothly.
Well I finally was able to get to the range today. Great day overcast with a temp of 4.0 degrees and no wind.
Here is the 30-06 targets sorry so big, but can't figure that part out yet. I think it is a no brainer at a length of 3.320". This is what I have been used to with this rifle. It...
