How about this? Find a 308 you like (used/new) that would fulfill your ambidextrous desires and then just have it rebored to either the 338 Fed, or the 358? Granted on a lever rifle you would probably have to 1st remove the barrel, but that's no biggy.
Reboring is the route I took when I just...
I went through the 'chasing a powder' phase for my 7/08 about 6 years ago. I did it before with my finicky 308 Carbine.
In the end of too much $$ spent, too much wasted time loading shooting and my EX being a absolute Witch (replace with a B) I finally came to the conclusion that if I can't get...
Not rifle related, but Darton Archery did me a Huge one, over a split riser, some years ago. No questions asked. Buck Knives as well, on a broken blade. Both no charge.
I put this together specifically for my 'Elk' rifle. It's a Ruger American Wolf (digital camo stock), re-bored to .338 Fed. Topped with a Leupold 2X7X32 Duplex, and running Nosler 200gr AB's with a full charge of LVR. Weighs in just over 7 1/2 lbs, fully loaded !
I kept a watchful eyes on SPS for a couple of years. When the 140 BT's popped up I bought a boat load of them ! If you already have loads that are accurate, then don't fret too much over velocity.
I won't even try to guess how many of us 7/08 guys are all using 41-43 gr of Varget, or RL-15...
Have you checked out Shooters Pro Shop ? Noslers '2nd's' bullets web site. I've never found ant performance difference, just cosmetic. Keep an eye on the site and when you get a Hit, buy, Buy, BUY !
+1 for the 165 BT. +1 for 4350. I would actually not look for a 450 yd load, but the best group I could get at sayyyyyy 200yds. 450 is Rare, 50-200 is common. Load for the 95% shots. The biggest buck I've ever shot was with a 165 BT at 2550fps, 150 yds out of a 308 carbine. Hit the front left...
I have to admit it. I'm not 25, 45, nor 55 anymore. I truly love my Ruger M77 boat paddle, but it's seeming a little hefty these days. Are any of you experienced in shaving about a pound out of a brick stock ? I'm sure some judicious channeling of the forearm interior, and maybe a drilling into...
I...Dunno. Are you sure your getting 2900fps? That seems pretty hot. May be a good idea to have someone on the forum run a QL on your load.
I'm sure the LRAB will work just fine. AB's are boringly consistent performers.
If you'll jump back & forth between what Nosler publishes for the 308 Win (24" brl) and the 7.62x51 Nato (18" brl) you can do a little extrapolation and see that around 43.0 gr of RL-15 should get you about 2600 fps.
Hey, us guys have waited for a long, long time to at least have ANY opportunity to hunt with a rifle, straight walled or not.
No, I will not argue the insanity behind why a 38 Special and a 50/110 are legal.
A 38 Spec is absolutely as marginal as one could get....a 50/110 is perfect for a...
Why has nobody mentioned Momentum ? Everyone seems caught up on energy.
For me? I have a 338 Fed, a 308 Win, and an inherited 30/06. They all shoot about the same accuracy wise.
When, If, I draw an elk tag, I'll be packing the 338.
Seriously I have to ask. What part of the game animal expiring within eyesight was not acceptable ?
I've had a dozen whitetails, Axis, Black Bear & hogs do a Bang/Flop DRT, all with the same rifle and load.....then had a calm, feeding 100# whitetail doe take off like a horse out of the blocks...
Another 3 ingredient easy one.
1 cup peanut butter
1 cup sugar
1 large egg
Mix it up and use a tablespoon to scoop up enough to make about a ball just a bit bigger than a whole walnut shell, but smaller than a golf ball. place on a greased baking pan, set in preheated 350 degree oven for 30...
Here's one that is easy, just 3 ingredients.
1 12oz can of room temp beer.
3 cups self rising flour
1/3-1/2 cup sugar
Just mix it all until blended in a bowl and then dump into a standard bread pan that has been either coated with butter and dusted with some flour, or sprayed with 'Baking...
It's a little heavy for the Waters, but if pushed, as long as range is on the close side it would probably do OK. I think the Speer 130gr would probably be a better suit.
You didn't mention the barrel length. If it has a 26" tube I'd jump on the .257. Always wanted one, but too few chances to get one. The long tube would let you really get all out of the 257 that you could possibly hope for.
If it's 22'-24" I'd grab the 7X57. You don't have a 7mm now. I've never...
This is from my personal standpoint/experience and is by No Means an expert opinion. If it doesn't stink and roll your eyes when you smell it, it's probably just a side effect of prolonged storage. I would be far more worried about a powder store in too warm/hot/humid conditions, than one stored...
