I Loved hunting AZ, when I lived there. Took some quick getting up to date, equipment wise (cacti Everywhere), but it's an under-rated state, especially for bear. (cottontails too)
An on-line buddy of mine bought a box of 338 Fed 200 gr Fussions. Says it had an insert that stated 56.1 gr of Alliant 2000MR yeilded 2869fps. Alliant website states 52.0 at 2725. 24" barrel.
Would someone run a QL on a Speer 200 using Alliant 2000MR w/ a Fed case, std primer?
Something seems...
I hunted with a 7RM for over two decades. Actually my 1st buck was shot with the 7RM and factory 175's. I was not impressed.
Just my $0.02, but I think you'll be far better off with a 150, or a 160 gr.
I used 162 gr Solid Bases for as long as they were available. GREAT bullet. Then switched...
You may claim me a crazy old man, who have lost his facilities, but I'll toss this out to you because I Know it works far better than most folks will admit. With this codicil, the elk mayyyybeee not included (you have to get the tag 1st), I'd seriously, seriously look at the 125 gr BT/AB in the...
It's all fun until the skinning knife has to come out. By the time you get to the grill, you'll have well earned that juicy bacon wrapped piece of backstrap !
When Nosler dropped the Solid Base bullet line-up I was forced to try something different. My 1st try turned out to be so good I never even looked at anything else. The 150gr BT.
Shot it for over a decade out of my 7RM, and then the same amount of time in my 7/08. Can't/Won't say anything bad...
I hunted with a 35 Rem for a couple of years. Loved the cartridge, hated the M336, so I traded it for a Jon boat & motor.
All the deer I shot went down pretty d@mn quickly. Nice quarter sized exit holes, stand-up/spray paint blood trails for the whole 20-40 yds it took to recover them...
I'm going take a SWAG at this and say it's the powder, or more accurately the powder's burn rate (BR). I checked the BR of S335 and it's comparable to H332. Nosler load data only lists H332 with the 110gr bullet. I'm thinking that if you're dead set on using Somchem you should take a step up to...
Just a suggestion. Find a 308 that fits your bill and then just rebore it. You'll likely save some money. A couple of years ago I did a rebore based off a Ruger RA Wolf, topped with a Leupold 2X7X33, and had the trigger tweeked.... and still came in at about the same price of a raw new M77 Ruger.
I've tagged 4 whitetails with a 336. Two in 35 Rem, two in 30/30. All were one shot, one tag!
I bought the 35 Rem and put some heart into getting into a reliable E. NC brush rifle. Two problems with it. HATED the cross bolt safety, that seemed to magically engage itself for no d@mn reason, and...
I have a fussy 308 carbine. Free floated the barrel, glass bedded the receiver & screws...Frustrating to be sure, but I landed on 180 BT's w/ RL-15. 7/8" groups at 2450 fps. Inside 200 yds it's MORE than enough for anything that might eat you.
Just my to lame a$$ $0.02 worth. Great group, impressive. How-sum-ever.....Why a 160 ?
I really don't see the 160 as that useful, except under some extreme circumstances, when the 140 AB (or 150BT) would expand your possibles/probabilities by a Huge margin.
What is your mindset?
That was the 1st bullet I used in my 7-08 when I converted from my 7RM. They were what I used in the 7RM and I was too cheap to go out and buy something else.
Problem was....They Were Awesome !
I've had 100% first kills with them on whitetails and pigs for over a decade. Never recovered one...
