Heath and Old man,
Have either of you chronographed your loads?
My old load from 1982 used H4831 which gave me more velocity that IMR.
I have a 0.3095 bore and conventional throat. With winchester fire formed brass (from 300 h and h) I am getting 3340 fps with a 180 grain Bitterroot...
EFW, you can see what an expanded 64 grain looks like in the bullet test section. Great expansion, weight retention and penetration (about 17 inches) which is max you can get with a 223.
Speer not even close to same class as a 64 bonded solid base.
Only other bullets I would use for deer...
Jim, there are others here more experienced than I to discuss this but at first glance it looks like you are increasing velocity about 10 fps per tenth grain between 24.5 and 25.0 and doubl that when going from 25.0 to 25.4 grains.
I would not exceed 2900 fps average which will probably be...
SJB,
Yo may have already seen it since you are an elk hunter, but Dr. Wayne Van Zwoll mentioned Bitterroots in his monthly column for Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation magazine, Bugle. (Page 149 July/August issue).
I dont know if Wayne visits here or not but Id like too say thank yo to him for...
Guy, nothing really wrong with 2750 fps. That is what you get on a warm day with Federal Fusion MSR in a 16 inch. Fusion is also a SAMMI rather than NATO load.
Most people dont realize how different a 556 nato and 223 remington are from each other. the nato loading makes a 223 look more like...
I am running out of my favorite 180 grain Bitterroot reloads, and need a new recipe.
Would you guys share your favorite reloads with all of us?
I have a 26 inch long stainless 1-8 twist and it will stabilize anything.
I have been impressed with Barnes facotry ammo with 180 Tipped TSX, about...
Jim, I would be surprised if you got more than 2800 fps from a 16 inch even at NATO pressure using NATO LC brass with that powder.
By all means try it an please post results here.
If you can find Win 748 or RL 15 you can get that much velocity or more at exceptional accuracy. Common powders...
Jim,
I found my data with Remington 7 1/2 primer. Made a big difference in consistancy. Ive loaded several hundred of these now. It is my std load. Not quite as accurate as Win 748 or RL 15 at 2800 fps but for 125 fps extra velocity I will take it.
FBI ammo loaded by Winchester...
Back in 1980-82 when I tested most of the then available 375 bullets out to 600 yards, I got a couple inches less drop with my quick twist (1-8) barrel than a std 1-12. I used a quick twist to over stabilize bullet so it would mushroom perpendicular to base. Bill Steigers and I observed that...
Here are my chronograph results from a 16 inch 1-9 twist, NATO chamber, with the64 grain bonded solid base. Dont have data here for the CFE223 with Remington 7 1/2 primer, will try to add it later. Made all the difference int he world with CFE. Dont even bother with the CCI450, too hot a...
Huntress,
No offense, and I really mean that, but if you are looking for a "box" of Bitterroots, it means you have never really seen them, used them, or seen them used.
They were not sold in a box.
They were sold in a vinyl package of 25 bullets, so you could confirm zero with five and hunt...
I was disappointed in the Rhino bullets in .458.

I tried the 425 and 485 grain.
Not nearly the velocity envelope or frontal area of a 400 or 450 grain North Fork.
The GS deserves alot of credit for popularizing both FN and "driving bands" to reduce fouling and...
SJB, I doubt that Bill has scanned my old article. It was 20 pages front and back with B&W photos.
The original Barnes copper jacketed bullets you mention had an 0.049 thick jacket as I recall, but did not do too well in my .375 test. Most of the retained weight was in the jacket.
Gerry...
The Woodleigh is no where near a Bitterroot. Amazing when you consider Bill was making this great bullet in the late 1960's long before Jack Carter (TBBC), or Lee Reed (Swift) popularized bonded bullets.
The Woody has a 90/10% jacket I think and is a straight taper, meaning same thickness...
SJB,
In about 1982 Bill published my extensive test of all available 375 bullets at std and improved velocities recovered from 5 gallon water cans from point blank out to 500 yards.
Many many pictures of expanded bullets across the velocity spectrum.
Aslo pics from bison.
You can write or...
Thanks a million Fotis.
I would not have gone that high with 4895, which I have alot of, and would like to use up! I really wanted to make 2620 fps anyway which is what I am used too with the SMK's. Looks like I might exceed that if I can.
I had not seen a load for CFE223 either, and I...
