.8" at 100 is 4.8" at 600 in theory. In reality it's probably double that from a field shooting position if not larger. If the extreme spread is high you could see a good amount of vertical spread in the groups. I've seen a lot of factory ammo with extreme spreads over 60fps and some even...
I killed a deer at 813yds with a 300RUM and 180 Ballistic Tips. I wouldn't hesitate to use them on a elk but if you handload higher BC bullets like the Bergers or ELD-M'S would be my first choice. If you want a tougher bullet the Super Bulldozer II's, Hammers, or Barnes LRX would be a good...
I've used a 6.5x47L, 6.5-300wm, 7-300wm, 7STW, 300wsm, 300wm, 30-8mm Mag, 308 Baer, 338 Baer, 358STA, 375-358STA, and 416 Rem Mag on elk. I've also killed a bunch with muzzleloaders in .50 and .54 caliber. I personally like .300 magnums. The 338's and larger calibers require heavier rifles to...
I hope the Trump slump comes soon. About the only thing I will need soon is more primers and todays prices are stupid. I bought 40k in the late 90's for around 1.50/100. This 10.00/100 price is stupid. If it gets back down near pre Covid levels I'll buy 40+k more and be good for probably the...
There were very few action choices in the 90's for .378 Weatherby based cases. Mark V's, some old Square Bridge Mausers, and Hall custom actions were about it when I built mine.
The accuracy went to hell at around 100 rounds and it got shoved in the back of the safe 20+ years ago. I should dig it out and see what the bore looks like now that I have a couple borescopes. I was shooting WC872 ball powder in it so I wouldn't doubt there is a carbon ring somewhere. I was...
I built a 30-378 Imp with a 35 degree shoulder and a .308" neck length with minimal case taper. It shot 150's over 4000fps in a 30" barrel, 165's 3850fps, 180's 3650fps, and 210's 3500fps.
I've used it for quite a few years too. This year I used it more than normally because of the units we hunted but just having the landowner info is helpful at times. I get the 50 state version as well since I typically hunt out of state. I get it for 60 bucks through Guidefitter. It's a site for...
I have a .45 and 2 .40's. All of them are Remington 700 single shot actions and Brux barrels. Pittman makes some pretty high BC bullets for them. Idaho still has archaic muzzleloader rules but several other states have pretty liberal rules and that is why I built them. With a large powder...
Congrats to all Scotty. What is that grey stuff in the old beard? :)
Did the Old Goat get to draw blood? He hasn't been around here much lately. Tell him we miss him.
I saw a couple bulls this morning chasing cows. Unfortunately they were 5-600yds on to private property and I only have a cow tag until 10/25. After that it's bulls and cows where we were. One was a 300+" bull and was super cool to see shining in the sun just after sunrise.
I shot my last moose in AK with a 300wm and 215 Bergers. I shot it at 250yds through the front shoulder and it exploded both lungs. It went about 30yds and piled up. "Match" bullets aren't for everyone, and I've even made a few bad shots with them (most of them were animals that moved), but if...
I wouldn't use 162's in a fast 7mm. I shot a bull at 533yds with 162 Amax's doing 3265 and it didn't make it past the first lung. From what I've seen the Amax and ELD-M bullets perform the same on game. I would want to keep the velocity well below 3000fps if I was shooting elk with them.
From what I've read about them they are more violent than the EDM's. With those 2 calibers I doubt your velocities will push them to their limits. I have a bunch of the 230gr .30's to try in one of my .30's when I get a chance.
I have only used a few powders in mine, I shoot mostly magnums and slow powders like R-26, H-1000, and N-570, but it has been easy. You might have to play with the speed a bit to get the measurement correct if your going for max speed with each powder. If you slow it down a bit it seems easier...
