Looking for some advice folks..
My wife and I are in the position to be able to build our forever home on a piece of land that we own. She has been gracious enough to think of me through this process and has inquired as to where my "reloading room" should be. So what say ye???
Should I just...
I have a Remington 30-06 that has always shot pretty well. a lot of sub moa groups and a lot of low ES. Most of my past and best experience has been with Hornady brass that has been fire formed and neck sized. I have started to use some virgin Nosler brass that I did run through a full length...
Thanks for all of the input. My son likes "his" 7-08 and my plan is to start putting him in for KY youth elk quota or even an out west elk hunt in next couple of years. Just wanted to start working on a load for "his" rifle! Thanks again this is a great place to get quality information.
I have been working on trying to develop a possible 7-08 elk load. I used a 140 gr Accubond and Staball 6.5, got a 4 shot average of 2890 fps. My group size wasn't exactly what I wanted but I feel like I can fix that. If taken on an elk hunt shot would be 300 and in. Would this be enough? I have...
I have had great results with 4451 in 30-06 with 165 gr bullets, 2925 velocity with Single digit SD/ES and 1/2 moa groups. Also had luck with 4451 in the 270. I have successfully used IMR 4831 in 243, 270 and 7 mag. Speeds with 4831 have not been top notch but accuracy has been.
After attempting to load the 140 gr TTSX in 7-08 and now the 180 Etip in the 30-06 I am learning that I should probably go to mid weight bullet compared to the heavier for caliber side of bullets.
Thank you all. I suppose I am showing my ignorance with the all copper bullets. Just started to mess with them here recently (trying to broaden horizons) and my lack of knowledge is evident.
First I am not a speed freak, I know a 180 gr bullet out of a 30-06 will kill about anything. However, I always like to try and load to optimum performance. I am not experienced with the 180's in the 30-06. What velocity should I try to shoot for to load the 180 E Tips in my 24 inch tube 30-06...
Thanks Joe. I have not spent a lot of time with the chrono on the 7 mag but have learned to appreciate the power that you mention. Whenever suppliers get some in stock I am planning on trying to get the 160 accubonds to do the same thing.
Thanks all. Pharm if I could get some RL26 I would definitely give it a shot. I know for a lot of people with a 7 mag getting a 160 grainer to fly over 3k is not that hard. With the 7 mag I have always had loads that are quite a bit below stated velocities in manuals and by word of mouth. I know...
Been wanting to get my Tikka to launch a 160 gr pill 3000fps. Finally able to get it done this morning. I used a 160 gr Speer BTSP with 66 gr of R23. Was able to get an average of 3019 with an SD of 4 and ES of 8. To make things even better I got a 4 shot group of 0.724 inches! Feels good to...
Just got a box of 180 gr .308 E Tips in the mail from cabelas. They were on sale and when I ordered them I do not remember seeing anything about a band on the bullets. A few questions:
1. Do all E tips have a band on the bullet? (i do not think they do)
2. Is the purpose of the band to act like...
The reason that I choose the 140 is that I live in KY and I am going to start putting my son in for the Ky youth elk hunt draw. I want to find a load in the 7-08 that I would feel comfortable letting him shoot at an elk. Shot a group with 45.5 gr of Staball 6.5 and got an average of 2812 fps...
Thanks for all of the responses and advice. I have plenty to ponder. Getting a hold of components and a rifle that I would want right now would be pretty difficult.
I recently picked up a box of Barnes TTSX 140 gr in .284 on sale. I can reload for the 7-08 and the 7 mag so I figured I would give them a shot. I have never loaded all copper bullets, so I am looking for suggestions. I shot my first group today with a starting load of 44 gr of Staball 6.5 out...
