Re19 USED to be a good powder for the 708.
Re17 is like ice cream and apple pie for the 708!
It really is a wonderful combo of speed, controlled pressure, and case capacity match....if your gun likes it!
All that said...as ez as the ablr opens at long range....and holds velocity....there maybe...
I have both the hornady unit and a rcbs. About 20% of the time they measure fairly equally. 80% of the time the hornady unit measures about 1/3 the run out of the rcbs.
The big argument is which unit more accurately reflects how a casing lays in a rifle chamber...keeping in mind some chamber...
Most factory rifles have chambers cut that have an ez .015-.020" over and above saami spec for trim length. So..I guss all the brass we use is a little "short"!
The oversizing idea is pretty valid. I now use a hornady head space checker to set my sizing die but in the old days tinkering w/the 7-30 waters did not.
If the shoulders on the 308 were blown out a few thousandths and along comes a 708 die trying to move shoulders and neck down perhaps funky...
I just looked at some ammo I downsized from 308-708 and can sort of see a little of what you got on mine but not as much. When you downsize 308-708 the neck of the 308 becomes part of the shoulder of the 708.
I wonder if being annealed is making that happen a little more pronounced on your...
Reminds me of a mini version of what I see converting 3030 to 7-30 waters. My rings are far more pronounced. I'll bet a 12 pack you load em up and shoot em and the ring goes away never to be seen again. And accuracy will be fine when you fire form.
If they chamber..load up a medium load and...
Haven't used patch out but love wipeout.
A boreguide w/oring will be your friend.
There is a very extensive thread over at 24 hour campfire if you want to take a look there...its either under "reloading" or "ask the gunwriter" sections.
Re17 was the Schnitzel for my buddies 300 wsm too.
I'd have to look up the exact charge and speed but we shot some fed factory 165's and checked speed and worked up to that and we had excellent accuracy.
Funny thing is the fed load was leaving faint extractor marks. Our loads w/re17 never did...
Hey Fotis....it seems like you are a proponent of the hornady concentricty checking and correcting tool.
Is that group another demonstration of ammo run past the tool?
(And of course a marksman w/ nerves of steel, a trigger finger as smooth as fine silk, and the eyes of an eagle?) Didn't want...
I've seen alot of reports of good accuracy w/the 160 gummy tip and 35.0 of leverpowder.
My marlin absolutely loves the nosler 3030 ballistic tip round nose on top of 34.0 h4895 at 2320fps.
This is a neat bullet w/a thin jacket on top but gets very stout at mid section...its longer than a 170...
There's a guy over at 24 hour that runs a ballistic lab and sells once fired stuff really reasonable...like 250/$50 delivered for many popular calibers. His offerings last about 6 minutes and they're gone. I've bought alot and been very happy. With that big of lots I can wt sort and sort by...
Only have to do it once. Fwiw....if you don't mind win brass the necks are thinner to begin with and after downizing to 708 will be as thin or thinner than other brands.
My 308 rem vtr also has a ton of freebore....and NO extra magazine room to help get close.
But its still a good shooter w/a number of loads...kind of anxious to try the 190 lrab....seems like the lrab's are liking some jump.
Computer programs like quickload panic over long bullets like the 150 ablr....and raise the pressure warning flag quickly. But they have no way of knowing the guns freebore or the brg area of the bullet. I will say from my experiments to date the 150 ablr seemed to make pressure like most any...
Years ago a well known shooter at snipers hide decided to load as batch of "careless" ammo. He did use his favorite recipe but broke out his old FL dies and threw together a batch of ammo with virtually no controls. No sorting, checking of run out, matched trimming, primer uniforming. Just...
Chamber size and powder lot variability can play into things too. I usually get a chrono reading and change the case capacity function on ql till it matches chrono speed and work up from there. Also temp should be matched....usually 1 degree down from 70 degrees equals about 1 fps. Not a...
