    Eagles

This past November I was in northern Oklahoma hunting deer. Before first light I was hearing an awful scream and dozens of turkeys going crazy with all kinds of gobbles, yelps, and such. I opened up an app called Merlin hoping to catch the sound so it could ID the scream. The next scream...

Had lunch w/ a Biologist today...

My wife and I have a saying that is uttered at least twice a week when we compare our days, "You just never know what the day will bring..." Well, today I was fortunate enough to have lunch w/ a Biologist. I have known him on the periphery of life, but no longer. I knew he was an Ecologist or...

    Accurate powders in 7 mag?

I could never get 4350 or 4831 to consistently work. H1000 and 7828ssc worked very well with 160's and 175's in both my Tikka and 700. If I couldn't get Alliant powders, I would certainly feel good switching my set up over to 7828ssc. -B

today's deer was full of surprises...

Thanks for the suggestion of attaching the tine to mount. When cleaning him up I found he actually had 4 tines broken off. Christmas gave me time to finish him off...

    7mm WSM & RL 26

I've just started shooting a new to me 7mmWSM. I had a small bit of RL-23 left around this fall so I loaded 10 rounds of 160g Accubonds for this deer season at 68.0g. It shot very well, but the speed scared me - 3150 ft/sec. More on that here...

Keeping up w/ @nydan; also loving the 7mmWSM...

More context: I took the red pad off and ground down a Pachmayr 215. I put in a new trigger spring from Ernie the Gunsmith. I reloaded 10 rounds with 66g of RL-23 w/ 160g Accubonds. I figured this would be a generic, published, easy load that might work well. I can't remember if I used...

Keeping up w/ @nydan; also loving the 7mmWSM...

Like Dan, I acquired a 7mmWSM this year. I haven't dialed it in, but 160g AB were going over 3100 and functionally accurate. The accuracy was adequate, but the terminal performance was amazing. Great morning in the woods... -B

today's deer was full of surprises...

This deer has much character, so much so it is probably worth a short story and a few pics. After a couple of hours sitting on a perfect morning and seeing zero, he snuck right by me upwind. But with the strong wind keeping my scent away he was none the wiser. After a rather poor shot...

    three lessons learned this week...

Context: Last weekend was the opening of muzzy season. I had found a good rub line in a part of our lease where nobody had been. Opening day I set up properly based on the morning's wind and chose to sit on the ground in the hardwood due to leaves and field of view. Around 8:30AM comes a...

    Newbie To Bows

3MPB, a decade or so ago I was where you are currently. All the above is great, and read all you can. I would add that what assisted me the most was going to a good archery shop. We had one in the next county over and the manager of the shop let me shoot numerous offerings, fitted me, gave me...

    A first w/ a GHO...

I had a first while bow hunting last Sunday. As the sun was about to come up I had a Great Horned Owl fly right by me in the tree. He never made a sound coming, going, or taking flaps. This really freaked me out b/c it didn't make sense or register with my small brain. I was astonished as he...

    Decibullz Earplugs?

I have a pair of the custom molded 31db. Some days I wear them, some days I use foam or silicone. I need to re-boil them and shape them again to my ear. It took me a few times of boiling/shaping to get one ear fit just right the last time. If I lost these, I would certainly order myself...

Mini groups within 5 shot group

bob_d: Listen to every other person on here first, and to anyone who might chime in on what I offer here - but I think it might be the temp of your barrel interacting with these loads. I would suggest waiting 5 minutes or more between shot and check your groups. I had something similar with a...

Model 70 Mount and Ring recommendations...

Many thanks for all the suggestions; here's where I landed. First off I knew I had to select a scope before trying to get the rings and mounts right. I was in no rush with this project so I wasn't really looking for an optic, until I was. On vacation last week it rained one day. I went to...

    Leupold Creedmoor Reticle

I like that reticle - 2.2 and 4.8 MOA for the dots. I bought that scope within days of when Leupold released it; I put it on one of my 7mmRM. It's just like the older Leupold LR (long range) reticle I have on a VX-2. I wish they would make that reticle an option in more offerings. Kudos to...

Model 70 Mount and Ring recommendations...

This is my first Winchester. I have admired them from afar for 40 years, until last week. This is a 2002 7mmWSM; it was made at that time with a sporter barrel placed into a featherweight stock. I'm not a fan of Leupold Standard or Dovetail setups. What do you suggest? For a scope I'm...

    Unicorns

Sorry, I was just continuing with a post above from last year. Truly, I never thought I would find a Superposed or a true sized 525 16 gauge w/ the schnable forearm; nor did I ever expect to find a FW M70 in 7mmWSM. Each of these speak strongly to the affective side of my hunting life b/c of...
