And as always, thanks Dr. Mike for running the numbers. I enjoy your posting of them even when it doesn't apply directly to a cartridge I work with. Pretty interesting stuff.
I've read from a source I trust that hard bolt lift and ejector marks on the brass are a poor indicator of pressure and that they often don't show until 70k+ psi. If it were my gun, I'd stick with whatever gets 3300ish fps in the individual rifle as a max; since quickload is predicting...
Higher temperature and, surprisingly, higher humidity, both make the air "less dense." So summer is definitely the time to shoot marginally stable loads.
I've used trail boss in a .243 with 75 grain hornady bullets with very good success. Impact was 6" low at 100 yards, but it 13 grains shot...
Berger's scale shows anything that calculates to less than 1.0 as unstable, anything over 1.4 as comfortably stable, and anywhere in between as marginally stable. Using sea level, 60 degrees ambient temp, and 1050 fps, the 165 ballistic tip registers 1.04 from a 1:12 twist. Faster muzzle...
What's your elevation relative to sea level? It's pretty easy to plug the numbers in and see how stable to bullet should be. There's a simple one on Berger's website, if you want to play with it yourself.
I'd love to post some, but even my new phone won't do it. And I don't have/want a photobucket or imageshare account. If you'd like, I can prob email you some...
Personally, I'd shoot the 130 in a .308 Win. It has the same ogive and boat tail as the 150, and gives a nice bump in velocity. If I were shooting regularly at game animals further than 400 yards, I'd not be using any Barnes bullets from the .308. And fwiw, the 210 ttsx and the 210 tsx showed...
They wouldn't be on my list of bullets to use in a faster cartridge when close shots might be likely, but I wouldn't be worried using these in the little 7. Performance was on par with the 120 nbt, which everyone raves about. However, I wouldn't use these over the 140 partition for hunting...
I tried twice to catch one of these, but was unsuccessful. Regardless, I figured I'd report on their performance. First, I lined up seven jugs to be safe. At 25 yards and with a muzzle velocity of approximately 2850 fps, the first 140 partition blasted through 5 jugs, squirted out the back...
Fired into milk jugs from 25 yards, muzzle velocity approx 2700 fps, found in bottom of third jug with no mark on the back of the jug, recovered jacket/core weigh 62.8 grains. There were some small fragments laying around, but I didn't bother picking them up.
I shot one of these into milk jugs yesterday. It was found in the bottom of the third jug, with no mark on the back of the jug. The remaining jacket still had some lead in it, which fell out of the jacket when I picked it up. The remaining jacket/core weigh 31.9 grains. Range was 25 yards...
I know you guys must get sick of running these for people, and I need to buy the program myself(along with a new laptop that actually works), but would anyone mind running a 108 and/or 123 lapua scenar in a 6.5x55 at 62k psi? I'm curious how the old warhorse will do at modern pressures and with...
A lighter .308" option in the 150-168 range would be my number 1 pick.
I think the heavier .264" is a no-brainer. Honestly, I would be surprised if that wasn't already in the works.
My .338 Win Mag would do well with a lighter option, but there are several good bullets already available in...
I don't have access to the 105 hpbt. And I looked in the 6mm forum- someone has already done a 105 a-max at pretty much the same velocity I have been running them. That one seems redundant.
On a side note, my boss has informed me that we're not working tomorrow, and he has about 30 milk jugs...
Yeah, no problem. You guys have always been more than helpful. If I can do anything to return the favor, especially when it's so much fun, then I'd call it a win.
Keep in mind, though, that I'm aaallllll out of milk jugs. So it will be awhile...
I thought it might be interesting to see how a 120 nbt or 162 a-max does out of both the 7RM and the 7mm-08. A difference of 350 fps might be a neat variable to examine. Also, I have a can of trail boss, if anyone wants to see a really low velocity impact...
It's going to be awhile before I can get enough milk jugs to go another round, but I'm already starting to think about which bullets to try next. This stuff is fun!
I have on hand:
.243 87 Hornady hpbt, 90 AB, 100 grain Hornady btsp, and 105 a-max
6.5x55 142 SMK and 140 CC
7mm-08 or 7mm RM 120...
