I went chukar hunting once on the Oregon side and you guys aren't exagerating the workout! I ended up pushing a bobcat out of some rocks, but I didn't know that's what it was until it cleared the grass and sage as it went over the ridge. Thought it was our buddy's dog at first so i wasn't really...
Scotty,
Sounds like a great road trip if nothing else! You went right past jmad and I's place too if you came down I-82 and got on I-84. Too bad you guys never got on a spike, we had no luck either in the Elkhorns. Elk were either higher up or on private ground.
I'm a little envious of your...
I'm actually very close to what Quickload says I should be doing with 52gr RL-17 at a COL of 2.90. This puts me .030 off the lands and gives a muzzle velocity of about 2950 avg. A little high on the ES for my liking at around 60fps, but this is not a long range load and accuracy is great...
150 Nosler Partition fired into three 2.5 gallon chemical jugs filled with water at 100 yds.
Penetrated through jugs 1 and 2 and left a dimple on the back of jug 3.
For comparison, this same load at 100 yds went through 5 milk jugs and nicked the 6th on it's way out.
Estimated impact velocity...
Thanks guys, I'm thinkin it ought to do just fine as well. I must say that I was a bit surprised when we walked up to the jugs and it had come clean through number 5. The first 3 were completely blown in half and the fourth had big splits in it, so I'm sure it expanded well too.
I will also try...
Agreed! That's pretty much what I was thinkin when I pressed the trigger on that one. Congrats to you and your Dad!
Nice moose Rich! Looks like he was beggin for it
Shot the 150 into some milk jugs today @ 100yds. Impact should have been around 2760fps per Quickload. Completely penetrated 5 jugs. There was a shrapnel wound in the 6th and a flat lead disc that I'm assuming is from the tip portion in the fourth jug. Didn't recover the bullet as it started to...
I've had a fair bit of success with Hogdon BLC-2 also. Probably 75% of my loads used varget at one time or another though, but as Guy and onesonek pointed out there are many good choices for the .308 win. I'd get several if I could afford it and let my rifle decide what shot best with the...
50 rounds into my new barrel from Pac Nor. Workin on loads for spike season.
Seems this one will do the job! Chrony didn't like the late light, but will try again in the morning.
They should be moving high 2900s; may be breakin 3k.
A Golden eagle landed on a piece of sage just uphill from us on this weeks elk hunt. What an impressive bird! I've seen them on a few occasions over the years and it never gets any less thrilling. They are just so well suited to the high harsh places they roam. Imagine the views they...
+1 to pretty much everything Guy said, although I do often take the time to bone them on the spot if it is down a canyon. 1 person with a good pack can take out a boned deer by himself. Of course I've never had to pack one 3 miles yet
It is too steep where we hunt to use anything...
My monster! He's not QUITE as big as ram161's lol, but he should eat fine!
308 win, 130TTSX This was the little buddy of kilgore's buck. He stopped to look back for his wingman and I had too much freezer space.
View from one of our favorite glassing spots
Congrats all on your 2011 successes!
I got back into the office friday after doing some spraying and found the most beautiful triangular box in the whole world sitting on my desk. Inside was my new Savage pre-fit barrel from Pac Nor. Took it up to Darrin Blagg of Blagg Rifles in Pendleton this afternoon and he installed it on my...
Confirmed mag dimensions: 3.020" internal length. Seated my two replacement dummies at 2.970" and ran them through a few times and all looks good. With instructions to throat with these rounds "on" the lands, most of my hunting rounds with probably end up 20-70 thou shorter (off lands) than...
That is a great point Rick. I was actually talking about that with jmad and will be double checking that number. I remember running 3 dummy rounds through the mag to make sure, and it seems like the tip had much more than .002 clearnace.
atm
I have to send in two more dummy rounds to Pac Nor for the pre-fit they are building me, as they can't find the ones I sent in June  . It is to be chambered in .284 win.
Any suggestions, considerations or things you learned the hard way by having a barrel throated to a specific...
Thanks backcountryhunter,
JES seems reasonably priced indeed. If I could find a used savage 243, 7-08 etc. for a great price, this project may be able to become reality early next year! I was getting all excited looking at fat 35 cal bullets on midway the other day!
