The simple approach appeals to me. One rifle, one load, use it for pretty much everything! Love it. JY Jones took almost everything in North America with the 165 gr Nosler Partition and his trusty Remington 700 30-06, then bumped up to the 200 gr Partition for a couple of the bigger species...
"For high velocity and long range rifle shooting, the best bullets I’ve ever used were Nosler. They have a fragile tip that’ll expand at most all effective ranges, yet the base half will carry on through the beast and leave a good blood trail.“Gun Notes” (January, 1962)"
Yuppers!
You folks who live in more humid climates - do you use dehumidifiers in your gun safes to prevent rust? What else?
Yes I live in Washington - but the dry side. Honestly, we get about 8" of precip a year here, despite some pretty heavy snowfall at times.
Rather dry here, almost a desert like...
This seems like it would be a fun and challenging hunt down in Texas...
Are the bulls as tough as I've heard? Like it's best to go at them with deep-penetrating bullets and a reasonably powerful rifle...
Is the meat as good as I've heard? Good from both bulls and cows?
Thanks for any...
They're pretty similar. Why choose one above the other for heavier game at modest range?
I don't have one of either. Which do you prefer and why?
Thanks! Guy
One of the guys I work with is pretty handy with a camera and grabbed this shot of my newer Kimber while I was shooting at the range. I think it looks pretty cool:
Often on Wheelgun Wednesdays I'll make a point of carrying one of my revolvers. I like revolvers and carrying them at least once a week helps keep me familiar with them. Today, I'll go with the old 2.5" pinned and recessed Model 19 and a cylinder full of 145 grain Winchester Silvertip Hollow...
I'm used to 45+P handloads and commercial ammo getting into the 900-950 fps range with a 230 grain bullet. That's a solid step up from the normal 800-850 fps with a 230 grain bullet that much of the commercial ammo I've used manages to produce.
But... 1000 fps? From a standard 5" 1911 and a...
That happened fast! Late on Wednesday I got an invite for a mule deer damage control hunt near and on an orchard. The landowner works with a local veterans group and only wants veterans hunting on his property. He says that the veterans have treated his land and his dirt roads with respect. He...
Wife and I have had about enough of Washington's crazy lefty government. 30 years ago when we moved here it was a beautiful state with a Democrat governor & legislature. But it was a good governor & legislature. We had open carry, good hunting, no obnoxious anti-gun laws. Property taxes were...
Question for the group. We have some very experienced handloaders here and I've not ventured into this area before.
I have a S&W First Model Double Action Revolver in 44 Russian. The gun is in good mechanical condition, though the finish is well worn and even some pitting. The last of these...
Was maybe 20 yards? Couldn't even use my big lens, had to step down to the smaller 75-300 telephoto. He still filled the frame, even at the 75mm length:
