I would do a full magazine test before settling on the Sierra SBT if I were you. I used them in my 338WM for a few years before realising that the tips were deforming badly in the magazine from recoil. The 1st two would group pretty good, but the 3rd, & 4th would maybe hit paper. If I shot them...
I realise that remingtonman is an experienced shooter. I was pointing out that he can use JBM to give him precise MIL holds for his particular set up. He could then do like I did, & make a drawing of the mil reticle, & mark the hold overs on it, & paste it on his stock, or inside his scope cap...
How much meat loss? That exit doesn't look that bad for a cannon shot. The last deer I hit with a 225 AB about 75yds was about the same size deer, but I could put my hand in the exit wound. Needless to say I had a LOT of meat loss from the off shoulder.
I can say that I've had mixed results with H-4831sc in both my 338WM, & 300WM. I could get good groups with it, but velocities were marginal as compared with H-4350, & H-1000 in the same rifles. Both use heavy for caliber bullets. 250 AB's in my 338, & 208 A-Max, & 210 Bergers in the 300.
My BOSS equiped winchester had a card with it that had sweet spots for various bullet WEIGHTS. Not specific bullets. Go with the sweet spot for a 180gr, & tune accordingly.
I use the 250 AB in my 338 WM, but I also have a 308 that I use 150 BT's in. for short range, brushy stuff. I found that the 200 BT's in my 338 were like a grenade on impact out to 200 yds. But the AB isn't a whole lot better either. Either one will destroy a lot of meat, but I'd rather lose...
Thanks guys. I found out that my back order was shipped yesterday. They didn't send me an e mail about it tho. It's actually a good thing, as my shoulder is still pretty sore from load develpoment on my 338 Win Mag. Time to get a shoulder pad I guess.
+1 on what JD338 said. I have tested the BT in my 338WM & they are explosive to say the least. The jacket will almost allways seperate on impact with soft stuff. I'd go with the AB & don't look back.
My buddy drew for Bethel. We've been hunting there for many years. He may have a good chance this year too. The season starts a week later this year. In '05 I drew, & got very lucky that there was some heavy snow. Without snow up high there are actually very few elk there during the season.
I feel your pain. I went out for turkey a couple weeks ago, but didn't see any. I want to go out to test some 250gr AB's in my 338, but I only have so many, & everywhere is back ordered on everything I want. Even the match bullets I use. I hope it isn't too hot for bear. I won't hunt when it's...
Thanks guys. I've always been able to tune my BOSS to get sub MOA out of this rifle. I have a 6 rnd slow fire group @ 750 yds that is on a 6" X 8" note book paper. That was done with 250 SGK's. But when I loaded them out of the mag, the tips deformed real bad from recoil, so I tried the 225...
I tried the 250 AB in my 338 WM, & could only get them to 2775 +/-. I can get the 225 to 2900. Checking the ballistics the only thing I'll gain with the 250 is 100 ft/lbs, but sacrifice velocity, & flat trajectory, so I decided to stick with the 225's. Now If I could get the 250 MRX to go faster...
I'm not diss'n the AB. I love them. I tryed the 250 AB a while ago, but I couldn't get it going fast enough to out perform the 225. I see the MRX is spendy, & it's posted BC isn't as good, but I might be able to get more velocity with them due to less bearing surface, & more case capacity from a...
Hi, all. I'm thinking of trying some 225 MRX in my 338 WM. I'm curious if anyone has compared them directly with the 225 AB. Are they longer? Were you able to get them to the same velocity? Accuracy?
Any replies would be appreciated. Thanks.
I have tested the Berger VLD(hunting) , & the A-Max. The Berger will penetrate a shoulder, & then some, but the A-Max, I wouldn't trust it. They are a fragile bullet. When shooting the two @ steel @ 700-800 yds I could easily tell which ones were which due to the dent in the steel. The VLD would...
